Northrop Grumman Strategic Space Systems Division (SSSD) has an opening for a Staff Engineer Mechanical Design Checker within the Mechanical Ground Systems Engineering team. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA at Space Park.

Mechanical Ground Systems Engineers support the design, fabrication, and use of Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE). MGSE is non-flight hardware used to support the integration, test, and launch of spacecraft and its various stages of assembly. This includes, but is not limited to, lift slings, transportation systems, robotics, zero-g deployment fixtures, pneumatics, propellant loading systems, etc.

Mechanical Ground Support Equipment Designers are responsible for the following:

  • Design and Modeling in 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software

  • Fundamental structural analysis techniques

  • Drafting using CAD software

  • Fabrication support at vendors including acceptance testing and inspection

  • End-user support during integration operations

  • Conceptual design

  • Requirements definition

  • Integration & Test process flow development

As a Staff Engineer Design Checker in this specific role, a qualified candidate is expected to examine engineering drawings and related documents for soundness, efficiency, and simplicity in design; completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy; correctness of materials and processes; conformity to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and practicability; and economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation. Types of hardware includes weldments, bracketry, mechanical fixtures, tooling.  The candidate is expected to have experience in design or analysis principles, processes, and tools.  In addition, the candidate is expected to be familiar with current fabrication/machine shop practices to provide guidance to engineers for design manufacturability and drawing clarity.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline plus 14 years of engineering experience OR Master's of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) discipline plus 12 years of engineering experience.

  • Experience creating or peer reviewing complex mechanical assembly and piece part drawings.

  • High level of experience and comfort with Geometric Dimensioning or Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Candidate must be willing to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance AND/OR SCI Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors and or Masters’ Degree in an Engineering discipline

  • Active/In Scope DoD Top Secret Clearance AND/OR SCI Access

  • Previous experience in MGSE design, fabrication, and proof load testing.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to mentor junior engineers.

  • Experience with design modeling and/or drawing efforts using 3-D CAD modeling tools such as CATIA.

  • Experience with machine shop fabrication best practices, processes, and capabilities.

  • Experience in structural analysis using hand-calculations and Finite Element Methods.

  • Familiar with MIL-STD, NAS, ASME specs/standards documentation.

  • Experience with commonly used mechanical off-the-shelf hardware (ie. fasteners, shims, washers, etc)


Salary Range: $132,700 USD - $199,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
