At Northrop Grumman, our employees have incredible opportunities to work on revolutionary systems that impact people's lives around the world today, and for generations to come. Our pioneering and inventive spirit has enabled us to be at the forefront of many technological advancements in our nation's history - from the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean, to stealth bombers, to landing on the moon. We look for people who have bold new ideas, courage and a pioneering spirit to join forces to invent the future, and have fun along the way. Our culture thrives on intellectual curiosity, cognitive diversity and bringing your whole self to work — and we have an insatiable drive to do what others think is impossible. Our employees are not only part of history, they're making history.

The Navigation, Targeting & Survivability (NT&S) Division, located in the North Chicago suburbs, develops state-of-the-art Electronic Warfare (EW) and targeting systems that provide situational awareness, self-protection, and offensive electronic attack capability to platforms across the electromagnetic spectrum.

By joining us, you’ll work on projects that help safeguard our nation and allies related to land forces, rotary wing survivability systems, international and U.S. military electronic warfare systems, communications systems, missile warning systems (MWS), and sensors, infrared countermeasure systems (IRCM), automatic test equipment, modeling and simulation, and situational awareness programs. The Hardware Engineering organization plays a key role in developing these solutions.

The Power Design Electrical Engineer role, within Hardware Engineering, involves full life-cycle product development from system concept and requirements through design, prototype build and test, production, verification, and field support while working in integrated product teams spanning Engineering, Manufacturing, Program Management, and Global Supply Chain.

The Power Design Engineer provides concept-to-production development, test, and integration of these technology areas:

  • High Voltage (>2kV) power supply architectures for RF Receiver/Exciter designs
  • High-potential isolation techniques, electronic packaging and thermal trade spaces
  • Space-efficient magnetic design, specification, and manufacturing
  • Regulatory compliance to DoD customer requirements, such as MIL-STD-704, 461, 464 & DO-160 and TEMPEST

The Power Design Engineer will design and develop power conversion architectures using the latest technologies from Linear Technology, Texas Instruments, and other integrated circuit device manufacturers to support the following applications: gigabit serial interfaces, Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Optical (EO) DSP, controls, data links, and embedded processing platforms.  Typical power outputs range from less than 1mW to greater than 10kW.   Power Design Engineers work with system, sub-system, and hardware engineers to develop requirements, architect new circuit design topologies, and printed wiring board layouts.  Designs are verified through spice simulation, laboratory verification, and formal qualification to electrical and mechanical environmental requirements, electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) requirements and EMI/EMC compliance requirements.  Design support is continuous from requirements definition through integration and test; and maintenance of design documentation and configuration management is required throughout the product life-cycle.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering and 2+ years of relevant experience; or MS degree in Electrical Engineering and 1+ years of relevant experience
  • Working knowledge of designing high frequency magnetics including: transformers, coupled inductors, EMI chokes and common mode filters.
  • High Voltage Power Supply circuit design experience, including schematic capture through test and integration.
  • Hands-on prototyping and debug experience testing complex power systems, including various switch-mode topologies and linear regulators.
  • Ability to translate system performance and operational specifications into hardware requirements, design, and test specifications
  • US Citizen and ability to obtain government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, focused on Power Conversion
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Warfare system/hardware and Space Systems/Radiation Hardened design practices
  • Recent power supply design experience utilizing circuit-related tools including Cadence Concept/Allegro, LTSPICE, and Ansys Maxwell or similar electromagnetic simulation software
  • Working experience with documentation, revision control and review systems similar to DOORS, ClearCase, and ClearQuest
  • Proven skills to include: project planning, communicating with all levels of an organization, adaptable, creative, collaborative and also comfortable working independently
  • Current Secret or Top Secret Security Clearance
