Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) seeks an Associate RF/Microwave Design Engineer or RF/Microwave Design Engineer in the Amherst Systems business unit within the Navigation, Targeting, and Survivability division. 

The RF Electronics Engineering organization located in Buffalo, NY researches, designs, builds, and tests a variety of electronic components and systems used in the development, test, validation, and training of Electronic Warfare hardware, software, and personnel to ensure the safety and success of the warfighter.

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled Associate RF/Microwave Design Engineer or RF/Microwave Design Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be contributing to the completion of assigned technical tasks, working collaboratively with the team to ensure project success, and delivering quality results. The Associate RF/Microwave Design Engineer or RF/Microwave Design Engineer role will involve collaborating with the team to ensure project success and delivering quality results. The ideal candidate should have a strong attention to detail, be able to work independently and in a team environment and have excellent problem-solving skills. Additionally, he/she should have a willingness to learn new technologies and techniques.

The ideal candidate will be committed to ethics and integrity and demonstrate the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business. They will also be an effective collaborator in a team environment and possess the ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems to develop solutions.

What You'll Get To Do:

The new team member will be reviewing and deriving technical requirements for RF systems and components, developing block diagrams, and performing simulations using software tools. You will also brass-board the design, make technical adjustments, and formally document the design for production.

In addition, you will support procurement/production, integrate, and test the final product, communicate with internal and external customers and suppliers, and write test procedures. You will also support technicians during testing of subcomponents and finished products.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Support RF leads in various projects.
  • Run basic simulations using software tools.
  • Read and understand RF schematics, source control drawings, and block diagrams.
  • Create test procedures for subcomponents and finished products.
  • Continuously learn and grow in the areas of test equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Work under general supervision and contribute to the completion of assigned technical tasks.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure project success and deliver quality results.
  • Demonstrate a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and techniques.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide updates on assigned tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Follow established procedures and guidelines.

Basic Qualifications for an Associate RF/Microwave Design Engineer:      

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related STEM field and a minimum of 6 months related experience.
  • Hands on experience on RF test equipment such as PNAs, Spectrum Analyzers and Power Meters.
  • Knowledge of simulation and design software.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship and able to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance if selected.

Basic Qualifications RF/Microwave Design Engineer:

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • This position requires U.S. citizenship and able to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance if selected.

Preferred Qualifications RF/Microwave Design Engineer:

  • Experience as RF lead on multifunctional teams.
  • Demonstrated capability to make difficult decisions that impact technical performance, program schedule and program budget.
  • Experience in activities related to Electronic Warfare systems development, use, testing and support.
  • In-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art RF components and test equipment.
  • Ability to proficiently use engineering analysis tools including MATLAB, ADS, HFSS and GENESYS.
  • Active U.S. DOD Secret Clearance.
  • Master’s degree in engineering, Business Management, Engineering Leadership, or equivalent.


Salary Range: $63,800 USD - $95,800 USD
Salary Range 2: $77,200 USD - $115,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
