Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsions Division is currently looking for a Principal/ Sr. Principal Materials & Processes Design Engineer to work in our Promontory, UT location.

Description & Responsibilities:

The design engineering position is a technical expert in the materials and processes associated with liners, adhesives, and thermal protections materials. The primary functions are design support for process development and production support located at the Promontory Utah facilities with focus on production and resolution of production issues. They are also the principal investigator and contributor for test efforts involving materials and processes associated with the mixing and application of adhesives, liners, and thermal protection systems. This includes troubleshooting and problem resolution involving material obsolescence issues and evaluation of replacements and recommended design/material changes to address legacy production challenges.

Responsibilities include:

  • Defining and managing requirements for materials and processes

  • Design ownership of material specifications and drawings

  • Leading test efforts including authoring test plans, providing instructions to the lab for how to perform testing, providing oversight, and reporting on test results

  • Addressing material obsolescence issues

  • Performing compliance assessment of product design against customer requirements

  • Design support for the production application of liners, adhesives, and thermal protection systems, including production data review and non-conformance response

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering or related field (3 years with a Masters).

  • Knowledge of solid rocket motor and production, including related manufacturing processes

  • Hands-on experience with production processing or laboratory testing

  • Demonstrated team leadership skills

  • Travel expectation of 0% – 5%, with primary work location at Promontory, Utah.

Preferred Requirement's:

  • Technical knowledge in either viscoelastic materials, liners, adhesives, or thermal protection systems

  • Familiarity with material obsolescence and vendor process change evaluation and qualification

  • Knowledge of M&P engineering design, R&D, analysis, test, and manufacturing processes

  • Previous team leadership experience, and hands-on design and/or analysis

  • Experience with NASA, commercial and strategic programs and configuration management requirements

Qualifications/Education

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (aerospace, chemical, electrical, mechanical, material sciences engineering, or physics) required with 5 years of experience or MS with 3 years of experience.

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 9 years with BS or 7 years with MS


Salary Range: $87,600 USD - $131,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $108,600 USD - $163,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
