Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems – Propulsion Division is currently seeking an experienced Energetics Materials & Processes Design/Principal Design Engineer.  The candidate will be responsible to contribute primarily in the technical discipline of propellant/energetics formulation and processing. This individual will be part of a diverse team of engineers and support/lead various test efforts, data analysis activities, engineering document updates, and production issues as they arise.  The primary work location will be at the Promontory, Utah campus.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Materials & Processes Design Engineering group is a collection of technical experts in the behavior of energetic materials and their production.  The primary accountabilities are:

  • Design support for production with focus on design fundamentals and correct incorporation of material requirements

  • Principle investigator and contributor for test efforts involving materials and processes, including troubleshooting and problem resolution

  • Program Materials and Process Plans and associated documentation

  • Resolution of material obsolescence issues

  • Authoring and revising technical material specifications

Job Duties:    

  • Define and manage requirements for live materials and processes

  • Define test objectives, author engineering test plans, prepare test reports, and provide oversight for test activities

  • Development, qualification, execution, and on-going support of new test specimens and methods as dictated by program needs

  • Manage program level M&P requirements including requirement compliance verification and material wavier justification

  • Provide material issue support and disposition as needed to maintain production or testing schedule and ensure compliance with test requirements

  • Coordinate with functional organizations (component design engineering, project engineering, process engineering, quality engineering, analysis engineering, program management, procurement, research and development laboratories) in the development and implementation of materials

  • Represent the M&P discipline to internal customers, external customers, and team members

  • Coordinate peer reviews, analysis, project status, and customer reviews

  • Ensure work product and deliverables comply with requirements and standards

  • Travel expectation of <5%

  

Minimum Experience Requirements:  

·Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in engineering or related field.

  • Engineering support experience with production processing or laboratory testing

Experience Preferred: 

  • Technical knowledge in either energetics, propellant ingredients, or live operations

  • Involvement in system requirement verification and validation activities

  • Familiarity with material obsolescence and vendor process change evaluation and qualification

  • Knowledge of M&P engineering design, R&D, analysis, test, and manufacturing processes

  • Previous team leadership experience, and hands-on design and/or analysis

  • Experience with NASA, commercial and strategic programs and configuration management requirements

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the capability to address high levels of management, detail oriented design and analysis engineers, and both internal and external customers and suppliers

  • Interpersonal skills and organizational savvy to ensure success:  easily relate well to a wide variety of diverse styles, build diverse networks, be quick to find common ground, and collaborate well with others

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Detail-oriented but able to understand the big picture

  • Demonstrated critical problem solving skills

  • Contributor on IRAD or technical development projects

Education/Certifications

  • BS degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Material Science Engineering, Chemistry or Physics with 2 years of experience or 0 years  with MS.

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 5 years with a BS or 3 years with MS


Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
