Northrop Grumman Space Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

The Mechanical Engineering group is hiring for a Sr. Principal Engineering Designer in our Mechanical Engineering team within the Launch Vehicles Business Unit at our Sterling, VA facility.

Essential Functions:

  • Work within the Northrop Grumman Design group and will be responsible for creating drawing/design packages with proper content and to ensuring compliance with applicable industry and military standards
  • Review designs for fit, function, manufacturability, economy of fabrication, and verifying completed work, checking dimensions, materials and quantities to be used
  • Review of tolerance analysis, hardware selection and fitment on assembly prints
  • Called upon to resolve interpretation issues on drawings
  • Verifying 3D models submitted to manufacturing utilizing Siemens NX 1946 managed with Teamcenter
  • Responsibility will further include liaison with various engineering disciplines, Manufacturing, and Quality
  • Some vendor liaison will be required as well
  • As requested, may supervise and direct the activities of staff. 
  • Modeling fully defined components and assemblies efficiently using Siemens NX 1946 managed with Teamcenter, and create/revise parametric drawings in conformance with ASME modeling and drawing standards
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Windows and NX 1946 as required.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately while under schedule pressure and exhibit a large degree of patience.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 9 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 7 years of related engineering experience, or a PhD in STEM with 4 years of related engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret security clearance
  • Must be experienced with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Must be experienced with weld design per AWS D17.1 and D1.1
  • Must have knowledge of standard manufacturing processes including CNC Mill and Lathe operations
  • Must be experienced with Siemens NX 1946 and Teamcenter
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s or PhD in STEM
  • Active DOD Secret Security clearance, or higher
  • ASME Y14.5-2009
  • ASM GDTP Certification
  • AWS CWI certification
  • Experience working with DoD programs
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.100 and Mil-Standard 100

Salary Range: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
