Principal Electrical Engineer - ADG

Northrop Grumman is seeking electrical engineers for our Avionics Design Group (ADG).  This position will be located at our Space Systems Sector in Chandler, AZ. The Chandler group performs cradle-to-grave engineering on the majority of their launch vehicles. They are working on approximately 15 separate vehicles at any given time, among them are Antares, Minotaur, Pegasus, GMD, Sentinel, and many more. Their products serve a variety of purposes including ISS (International Space Station) cargo resupply, deploying defense satellites, developing missile interceptor technology, and providing much needed target vehicles to better hone our military capability.

ADG’s Common Basic Qualifications:

  • BSEE with 5 years’ applicable industry experience or MSEE with 3 years’ experience.
  • Must be capable of understanding and adhering to department design standards.
  • Ability to work in an Agile project format, team based environment, including Jira and Git environments.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.  
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Active Secret Clearance is required

ADG’s Common Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance is preferred.

Within the overall Avionics Design Group (ADG) we are hiring in three different and exciting specialty areas:

PWB Layout Design

Job Responsibilities: PWB designer to design/layout boards for military/aerospace avionics and test applications for our Avionics Design Group.

Additional Basic Qualifications for ADG’s PWB Layout Design team:

  • PWB design layout experience with Cadence Allegro design tool suite.
  • Experience with high density, complex, multilayer boards (6-16 layers).
  • Experience with layout of analog and digital circuits.
  • Experience with layout/routing of high speed digital and controlled-impedance circuits.
  • Experience with rigid-flex.
  • Ability to prepare artwork (ODB++, Gerbers) for fabrication of PWBs.
  • Extensive experience with footprint/symbol creation and library management.
  • Understanding of IPC-2221 and IPC-7351 specifications.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for ADG’s PWB Layout Design team:

  • Understanding of PWA manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with legacy OrCad Layout, and Mentor Xpedition tool suite.
  • Familiarity with CAM350 DFM software.
  • Experience with high voltage or high current layout techniques.

EEE Components

Job Responsibilities: Focused primarily on and require detailed knowledge of Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) parts/components. Those responsibilities will include the following:

  • Generate plans and procedures for EEE part/component procurement and screening to meet company standards and contractual requirements. Support supply source selection and procurement efforts. Evaluate and adapt customer screening and qualification requirements. Review GIDEP Advisories and Alerts for program impact.
  • Support customer and vendor screening issues/failures and failure investigations, including interface with failure analysis labs. Support component test data review, lot sample destructive parts analyses (DPA) and prohibited materials analyses (PMA).
  • Using component failure analysis results interface with the project team to determine root cause and corrective action for EEE components that fail during assembly and box level test.
  • Review SOWs and contractual documents to identify EEE parts requirements, viable alternative solutions, and support proposals/cost estimates/schedules for EEE component selections, and be able to define/flow those requirements to suppliers and customer PMPCBs for approval to use in launch vehicle designs.

Additional Basic Qualifications for ADG’s EEE Components:

  • Strong knowledge of EEE parts including hermetic components and plastic encapsulated devices.
  • Knowledge of governing industry standards and military specifications for EEE parts.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise written/oral reports to technical teams, management, and customers.
  • Strong collaboration skills.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for ADG’s EEE components:

  • Knowledge of standards including Mil Std 1580 (DPA), Mil Std 883 and Mil Std 750 (Test Methods), Mil PRF 38534, -38535, -19500, -55681, -55342, -55310,
  • Failure Analysis Lab experience.
  • Familiarity with radiation tolerance/hardening concepts and practices.

EEE Resources

Job Responsibilities: The selected candidate(s) will work in a dynamic mission-focused environment where he/she will interact with a diverse team of Customers, leaders, and technical staff to maintain and support an uninterrupted delivery of avionics resources that meet program needs.  The successful candidate will apply their skills and knowledge of common manufacturing processes to identify opportunities to improve processes and reduce labor and expenditures. Working with a positive attitude to develop and enhance tools for adaptability and successful growth. Job responsibilities will be focused primarily on avionics assemblies, Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) parts/components, as well as internal design, procurement, and manufacturing processes. Those responsibilities will include the following:

  • Serve as a liaison between management, manufacturing, engineering disciplines and the Customer and implement steps to meet program and Customer requirements within the resource capacity of the design groups.
  • Create and/or process technical analyses, assembly drawings, product specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Evaluate EEE components for form, fit, function, interchangeability, failure analysis and lifecycle.  Perform receiving inspection validation and acceptance reviews, product inventory, and lifetime buy analyses.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct test programs required to evaluate the design, as well as evaluate any test failures and develop paths forward leading to corrective action.

Additional Basic Qualifications for ADG’s EEE Resources:

  • Understanding and application of divisional electrical engineering technical standards.
  • Familiarity with divisional engineering, manufacturing, and procurement processes
  • Knowledge of EEE parts including hermetic components and plastic encapsulated devices and their governing industry standards and military specifications
  • Ability to evaluate/validate an analytical model of an electrical component, subsystem, or system or physical system implementation.
  • Ability to prepare and present electrical engineering materials for Requirements and Design Reviews.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for ADG’s EEE Resources:

  • Experience with design, test and deployment of automated test equipment.
  • Knowledge of MIL standards including Mil Std 1580 (DPA), Mil Std 883 (Microcircuit Test) and Mil Std 750 (Semiconductor Test), Mil PRFs 38534, -38535, -19500, -55681, -55342, and -55310
  • Knowledge of microelectronic Failure Analysis lab operations and tools
  • Familiarity with radiation tolerance/hardening standards and practices.


Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
