Northrop Grumman Defense Systems, Special Mission Aircraft (SMA) Operating Unit (OU) is seeking an Electrical / Principal Electrical Engineer to join our team at our Middle River, MD or El Dorado Hills, CA facility. Our team provides customers with support specializing in the development of a novel turbine based power generator and pure digital power distribution electronics. The NGC IPMS team is developing novel energy production solutions for national security, military, and civil customers. The Electrical Engineer should have knowledge of and experience with circuit design/analysis and power electronics design to military, space, or aerospace standards.  In addition, the candidate should be familiar with testing and troubleshooting of these designs from a validation perspective.  These components are integrated into larger electric machine systems and in that vein, it is desired for the prospective candidate to have knowledge/experience of electrical testing to characterize machine performance, design for EMI/EMC test experience, and control systems experience.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines are also essential. This position requires the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to frequently changing requirements.  The candidate will be required to effectively and efficiently work at offsite locations that may require travel. 

This position may be filled at either as an Electrical Engineer or a Principal Electrical Engineer.

Basic Qualifications for an Electrical Engineer: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or STEM degree with 2 years related experience; Master’s Electrical Engineering with no related experience
  • Analog and Digital Circuit Design and Analysis ability and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic circuits (e.g. analog or high-voltage circuitry)
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and model electronics and power electronics in high level modeling environments
  • Power Electronics design or analysis capability and experience, primarily with Pulse Width Modulated Power Amplifiers
  • Familiarity with non-contacting sensors such as hall effect or inductive position sensors and integration into larger systems
  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a DOD secret security clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 5 years related experience; Master’s in Electrical Engineering with 3 years related experience; PhD in Electrical Engineering with no related experience
  • Analog and Digital Circuit Design and Analysis ability and experience
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot electronic circuits (e.g. analog or high-voltage circuitry)
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and model electronics and power electronics in high level modeling environments
  • Power Electronics design or analysis capability and experience, primarily with Pulse Width Modulated Power Amplifiers
  • Familiarity with non-contacting sensors such as hall effect or inductive position sensors and integration into larger systems
  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a DOD secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of work experiences with DOD related products
  • MATLAB/Simulink proficiency
  • Demonstrated experience modeling and performing analysis of integrated systems encompassing electronics, power electronics, control systems, sensors, and mechanical systems
  • Demonstrated ability in production issue resolution
  • PSpice proficiency
  • Zuken proficiency
  • Current DOD secret security clearance

This position reports to Middle River, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Sacramento, CA, CA, USA.


Salary Range: $99,800 USD - $149,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
