Northrop Grumman Aeronautic Systems has an opening for a Principal Engineer, Material and Process to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our South Bay Vehicle Engineering organization. This role will be located in El Segundo, California.

A Material Process Engineer 3 analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic material and processing specifications design allowables and fabrication and assembly processes.

  • Performs failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and prepares definition and requirement specifications. Reviews and approves subcontractor material processing procedures.

  • Coordinates with test laboratory by writing test plans, evaluating vendor material products, documenting test results, and producing test reports along with briefing materials for aerospace grade metallic material systems.

  • Provides program design support, solves manufacturing problems, and develops detailed M&P requirements from program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and AND 5 years of Engineering experience OR Master’s degree in a STEM discipline from AND 3 years of Engineering experience.

  • Experience in developing, characterizing metals, writing test plans/documenting test results, producing test reports, and briefings.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science

  • Aerospace & Defense Industry experience with an active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance

  • Experience in powder metallurgy and related metallic additive manufacturing processes (electron beam melting, directed energy deposition, selective laser melting, etc.)

  • Familiarity with metallic materials allowables development

  • Experience with metallic Nondestructive Inspection (NDI) techniques and their application to aerospace grade part quality


Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
