Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Principal Engineer Material Process to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Manhattan Beach, California.

Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Reviews microelectronic and microelectronic assembly designs for compliance with heritage processes and space design standards. Creates microelectronic part, material, and process qualification plans based on customer, internal, and MIL-STD requirements. Uses critical thinking to evaluate major design discrepancies and manufacturing and process deviations from MIL-STD-883, MIL-PRF-38534. Perform failure analysis of components, microelectronic systems and subsystems, life predictions. Understands and implements electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity handling and safeguarding requirements. Performs audits and evaluations of material and special process suppliers.  
Has excellent communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills. Provides mentorship for new hires and collaborates closely with Subject Matter Experts, suppliers, procurement, design, analysis, manufacturing, quality and integration engineers, as well as functional management.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline plus 5 years of engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) plus 3 years of engineering experience

• Proven leadership experience on a project and/or team

• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI Access

Preferred Qualifications:

• Materials and Process Experience in Microelectronics, Special Processes Experience (including wire and ribbon bonding, laser welding sealing of microelectronic packages, feedthrough manufacturing and installation, conductive and non-conduction component mounting to plated housings) OR Analytical Analysis Experience (SEM/EDX, FTIR, etc.)

• Active DoD Top Secret Clearance and/or SCI Access

Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
