The role of the Tooling and Process Engineer (T&PE) is to launch innovative defense platforms from a manufacturing vantage point. The Tooling Engineer will use advanced knowledge of manufacturing engineering fundamentals to help Northrop Grumman Defense Systems (NGDS) deliver innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers. The Tooling Engineer shall influence the development of NGDS’s next generation of Defense products by supporting new products from concept development through the start of production for manufacturing cost, yield, and schedule execution. This individual will work closely with the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, IPT Lead, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Operations to ensure producibility meets the program targets, including Yield and cost takeout.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize NGDS New Product Development Procedure as a guide to perform concurrent engineering
  • Support production initiatives by providing detailed work instructions in CostPoint MES
  • Use advanced manufacturing engineering experience to support development of new products, standards and processes to achieve manufacturing goals this includes MRLs, and following AS6500 standards
  • Refine and expand supply chain and engineering knowledge by learning from highly experienced engineers and participating in cross-functional projects that may require a broad engineering knowledge
  • Positively impact daily production activities and drive improvement in a quick manner, while in a collaborative environment for those New Products introduced to the production line
  • Mentor Jr. Manufacturing Engineers
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for tooling and process engineering matters on AARGM-ER and new product development.
  • For NPD initiatives the T&PE will work closely with the production manufacturing engineers to develop the manufacturing process. The T&PE will determine the preliminary work instructions with visual aids during the Engineering & Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase. The manufacturing engineer will support by developing manufacturing routers in Costpoint.
  • Develop proposals, BoEs, task Descriptions, and formal cost estimates based on Mil-Std-881.
  • Integration of new production tools/assembly fixtures. Work with vendors to develop tools.
  • Engineering Drawings & Specs - Basic ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Developing manufacturing processes, plans, and procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment in support of our process work instructions and visual aids of our shop planning process and other functions that affect product performance

Qualifications:

  • Manufacturing Methods - Knowledge of manufacturing, methods, and fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, and machines/machine tools)
  • Creo, ProE, NX or similar CAD experience
  • Coordination of design and fabrication requirements for tools and fixtures with customers, both internal and external
  • Tool/fixture design experience
  • Costpoint or similar MRP experience
  • Degree in any of the following: Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Experience leading projects to completion
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance and Special Program access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need


Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
