Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, Spacecraft Components is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of spacecraft components that power and enable satellites of all classes. We are currently seeking a Principal / Senior Principal Material Process Engineer to support the Materials and Process Engineering activities for our Deployables group at the Oxnard, CA site.  This role will be responsible for providing technical engineering guidance to the team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Recommend and support the selection, qualification, testing, and failure analysis of materials and processes for military and commercial space subsystems.
  • Analyze, research, design and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
  • Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic & composite material and process specifications.
  • Develop, analyze and apply material properties to develop design allowables, processing methods and quality engineering specifications.
  • Conduct failure analysis of systems / subsystems, material hardware life predictions, definition and requirement specifications.
  • Review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
  • Create parts, materials, and process (PMP) plans in compliance of customer technical documents
  • Participate in anomaly resolution by supporting Failure Review Boards (FRB) and providing non-conformance and failure analysis assessments.
  • Review and approve analysis and engineering drawings
  • Interact with internal and external customers.
  • Develop and present materials for project related briefings including design reviews to be given to internal and external customers.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines including design, manufacturing, quality, and procurement.

Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:

  • 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 3 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 0 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Experience in a materials and processes (M&P) technical engineer position.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Basic Qualifications for a Level 4:

  • 9 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline; 7 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 4 years of relevant experience with a PhD
  • Experience in a materials and processes (M&P) technical engineer position.
  • Experience leading and managing technical projects.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with common manufacturing processes, chemical coatings, metals and their treatments in the manufacturing of satellite subsystems. (Solar Arrays, Deployable Mechanical Systems)
  • Understanding of challenges encountered for materials in space applications. (outgassing, atomic oxygen, cold welding, dissimilar metals).
  • Prefer experience with 3D modelling software such as Creo & SolidWorks
  • Prefer ability to obtain a security clearance.

Salary Range: $95,000 USD - $142,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
