Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for a Manager Material Process Engineering 2 to join our team.  This position will be located in Sunnyvale, CA.

In this role, you will lead a team of 14 materials and materials test engineers engineering team supporting production and new design releases. This manager is responsible for providing functional leadership and technical direction for the team, and oversight of the material test lab.  You will work with your team to solve the toughest challenges in the industry and deliver world-class performance.  As a Functional Manager, you will be responsible for the employee leadership, direct supervision, and their career development.  The products you and your team will support include missile launch equipment, ship power generation and ship propulsion systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 14 material process and test engineers
  • Evaluate and resolve material concerns for production operations
  • Develop and revise material specifications and product specifications
  • Design and perform material testing to verify acceptance for production use
  • Develop requirements for mechanical, metallurgical, and chemical testing
  • Lead root cause and corrective action requirement analysis
  • Review materials, processes, and test requirements for parts and drawings to contract requirements
  • Manage test lab and test equipment to support business needs
  • Develop procedures and training plan to support knowledge transfer and critical skillset maintenance
  • Collaborate with customer on weld and NDT process approval
  • Champion continuous process improvements

As an engineering functional manager, the candidate will work to ensure all staffing needs are met, to drive talent development, and to instill a culture of technical ownership. The candidate must collaborate with functional and program leadership, business management, quality assurance, product development, and global supply chain management to resolve complex issues in a timely manner. 

This role is day shift with minimal off hour support. Travel is estimated to be less than 10%. We work a 9/80 schedule, which gives you every other Friday off to enhance work-life balance. Northrop Grumman provides a comprehensive suite of benefits.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree with 9+ years of experience
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Exposure to machining, welding and assembly processes.
  • 2+ years of technical project management.
  • 2+ years of experience managing a team of 8+ members (direct or matrixed reports).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance (US Citizenship).
  • Experience in metallic materials testing methods, procedures, failure modes, environmental effects
  • Knowledge in welding and nondestructive testing methods and procedures
  • Experience in material testing equipment such as tensile, hardness, charpy, and metallographic, environmental testing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with workflow management and metrics tracking
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to supervise and prioritize multiple projects on schedule and within cost
  • Ability to analyze data and make decisions that impact the organization’s credibility, operations and services
  • US Citizenship with ability to apply for DoD Secret clearance (or higher).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's with 7+years of experience; PhD with 4+ years of experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of management experience
  • Experience managing a laboratory for materials and component testing
  • Experience in non-metallic materials manufacturing, testing methods, procedures, failure modes, and environmental effects
  • Experience specifying and testing non-metallic materials such as rubber and urethane.

Salary Range: $134,600 USD - $201,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
