The Payload and Ground Systems organization within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. The Northrop Grumman SMORS BPP team in Colorado Springs, Colorado is looking for a candidate to join our Hardware Engineering team. This position requires a self-motivated, innovative and pro-active individual, willing to take responsibility for project planning through completion. The Hardware Engineer coordinates detailed project plans across multiple groups, develops comprehensive project plans across multiple hardware and software groups, coordinates project team meetings, customer interaction, attends technical interchange meetings, coordinates design review presentations, and collects and coordinates project status data. Provide direction on activities in accordance with organizational goals, motivate team members and facilitate team meetings, identify, and analyze problems, plans, directs tasks and provide solutions. This position also requires the ability to manage and provide status on multiple projects concurrently.

Other Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing proposed architecture changes, providing inputs to design, and completing a variety of engineering tasks simultaneously.

  • Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication, and assembly of electro-mechanical systems.

  • Development of technical solutions, creation of Basis of Estimates, review of transition plans, coordination of project buy-in across multiple groups, and updating of technical orders and engineering drawings.

  • Identify hardware components to replace obsolete parts, using system specifications to verify new items are Form Fit Function replacements.

  • Examines, measures, inspects, or tests defective parts for conformance. Evaluates findings to formulate corrective actions.

  • Analyzes engineering specifications and drawings; confers with quality, material, manufacturing, and subcontractors to provide and obtain technical information; investigates reports of defective, damaged, or malfunctioning parts, assemblies, equipment, or systems.

This position can be staffed at a level 2 or 3, based on the basic qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications:

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance is required.

  • Level 2: 2 Years with Bachelors in Science; 0 Years with Masters. 4 additional years of experience in lieu of a degree.

  • Level 3: 5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD. 4 additional years of experience in lieu of a degree.

  • Experience in Hardware Engineering including the ability to assess impacts of hardware changes to existing architecture and make recommendations for design changes.

  • Familiar with electronic test equipment to include digital voltmeter, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and network/spectrum analyzers.

  • Be able to read and use schematic diagrams for troubleshooting and problem-solving purposes.

  • Proficient with the following Microsoft Office Suite products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project

  • Understanding of configuration management and engineering processes to include an Engineering Review Process.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team in a dynamic environment.

  • This position requires the determination of detailed requirements for all logistics elements to include manpower, facilities, equipment and supplies (to include the procurement, storage, maintenance and utilization of material).

  • Ability to travel up to 25%. Occasional travel will be required for this position to perform site surveys, de-installation and installation of hardware and assisting with systems tests at customer sites (including OCONUS) and to Peterson Space Force Base.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands on experience with DoD logistics processes

  • Agile methodologies experience


Salary Range: $70,100 USD - $105,100 USD
Salary Range 2: $86,300 USD - $129,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
