Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems Sector is seeking Functional Manager for our Materials and Processes Team and Lab, supporting the Mechanical Analysis Section of the Hardware Synergy department in Baltimore, MD.  The manager will be responsible for both functional management and technical supervision.   Materials applications are primarily for electronic sensor systems, in varying environments, including airborne, space, maritime and land based. 

Overview and Responsibilities:

  • The manager will have a team of approximately 15 members, and is responsible for staffing plans, staff performance evaluation, goal planning, process improvement, roadmap development, and hiring to manage internal demand and skill attrition.  The position will lead the team through positive changes as a champion for improvement and innovation. 
     
  • Employee engagement and development will be maintained through a combination of training, employee career coaching, mentoring, identification of stretch assignments, and engagement action planning. 
     
  • Ensures that the people, processes, and tools are in place to maintain program cost and schedule performance, while meeting program customer design requirements and supporting development of manufacturing processes.  
     
  • Responsible for ensuring representation at internal technical reviews and customer reviews, material analysis/test report approval, and management of materials and process specifications for NGMS.

Lab management responsibilities include:

  • material and capital equipment procurement
  • managing preventative maintenance of equipment
  • calibration of equipment
  • staff training on equipment
  • advancement and improvement of internal lab processes
  • ensuring compliance for internal requirements and audits
  • lab cleanliness and presentation

Qualifications:

Strong communications skills, and an ability to build and maintain relationships with direct staff, customers, and cross organization partners.

Technical areas of proficiency for this team and those the manager should be familiar with include:

  • metallurgy and metals joining
  • corrosion and coatings
  • materials relating to electronic packaging
  • polymers, analytical chemistry, and bonding
  • magnetic ceramics
  • material failure analysis

    Basic Qualifications

    • Applicants should have either a degree in Materials Science/Engineering or a degree in a related physical science or engineering field combined with practical experience in Materials Science/Engineering.
    • Candidates should possess a minimum of 9 years professional experience, or a Master’s Degree with 7 years of professional experience
    • Familiarity with materials science lab equipment use (e.g. SEM, mechanical testing, analytical chemistry, polymer characterization, and determination of magnetic and dielectric properties)
    • Experience conducting failure analyses
    • Experience leading small teams, and mentoring less experienced technical staff
    • Strong leadership qualities, including excellent verbal and written communications , relationship building, and organizational skills
    • Propensity for advocating, or leading, change and process improvement
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated success leading a project, functional team or lab
    • Experience managing capital equipment, metrics and planning
    • Experience with electronic assemblies and a demonstrated record of solving problems related to materials in electronic assemblies
    • Familiarity with industry and government specifications related to testing and performance of materials
    • Experience working with external suppliers
    • Experience with additive manufacturing

    Salary Range: $128,400 USD - $192,600 USD

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
