Job Description

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Manager of Manufacturing Engineering to join the Design, Integration, and Test facility located at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia, PA.

The Manager of Manufacturing Engineering is a dual-role manager position with people management responsibilities, ensuring successful performance of a team including Manufacturing Engineers; as well as Manufacturing Engineering responsibilities, contributing directly to the completion of specific tasks.  The role will have design/process and hands-on manufacturing responsibilities, spending approximately 25% of the time or more on the factory floor with hours that may span multiple shifts. This position reports directly to the Northrop Grumman Philadelphia Site Manager.

The Manager of Manufacturing Engineering is responsible for the Manufacturing Engineers to ensure they are taking the product design from the drawing and converting it into a sequence of executable and detailed assembly/ manufacturing instructions.  In addition, this position would be integral in developing a facility-wide total preventative equipment maintenance plan. 

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Coordinate Manufacturing Engineering requirements for programs in Philadelphia to ensure work is distributed, in order to meet schedule requirements.

  • Develop and enhance Manufacturing Engineering procedures and policies to support site operational goals including continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Create new and modify existing assembly/ manufacturing instructions with necessary operations to support build sequence, while also including specifications/quality requirements.  Review and approve manufacturing instructions created by Manufacturing Engineers.

  • Work with Design Engineering to ensure proper Bill of Material (BOM) structure and alignment of the Manufacturing Instruction to the build for all programs.

  • Provide guidance to Design Engineering during drawing reviews regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques; and to identify any manufacturability challenges or changes required ahead of drawing release.

  • Provide guidance to Manufacturing Engineers in support of the technicians on the factory floor to assist in any technical questions regarding the product build; and to resolve issues regarding non-conformances.

  • Support development of tooling / fixtures to conduct the operations steps and to serve as manufacturing aids for technicians.

  • Ensure pre-operations / post- operations reviews complete for all manufacturing instructions and support implementation of lessons learned through continuous improvement projects.

  • Investigate and initiate corrective action to ensure product quality; resolve quality issues that arise during the build process to ensure all parts conform to the design configuration.

  • Develop facility-wide total preventative maintenance program.  Inspect performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency.

  • Facilitate maintenance of relevant manuals and procedures and ensure team is following procedures and process specs.

  • Support Development/ New Programs facility and manufacturing process establishment and increase facility capabilities/ assist with facility planning.  Participate in data gathering/ basis of estimate development for manufacturing engineering aspects of proposals.

The ideal candidate will be able to work individually as well as collaborate with a diverse group of individuals, work tactically, but with an eye towards future strategy, and exhibit solid communication skills with internal management personnel and clients.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus 9 years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree in Engineering plus 7 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with solid modeling tools such as Creo, Siemens NX, Solidworks, Pro E, Catia

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities as evidenced by prior experience leading a team, project, or in a supervisory role. 

  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree

  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T)

  • Experience with Engineering measurement techniques, sensors, data acquisition systems, and data management

  • Working knowledge of SAP or similar MRP system

  • Manufacturing background in a marine discipline (e.g., Rotating Machinery engineering or manufacturing)

  • Experience with Large Mechanical/ Electro-Mechanical Assemblies and Heavy Lifting Principles

  • Experience with machine tool equipment and machine shop processes (Vertical and/or Horizontal Machining centers)

  • Experience in implementing new designs and processes into a factory

  • Working knowledge and past experience with equipment and tooling suppliers

  • Understanding of welding and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) processes

  • Knowledge of medium voltage commercial electrical technology including transformers, motor controls, facility power distribution, etc

  • Fluency in MS Office Tools with a focus on documentation

  • Active Secret Security Clearance


Salary Range: $122,200 USD - $183,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
