Northrop Grumman Tactical Space Systems Division (TSSD) is seeking a Staff Level Mechanical Engineer supporting Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) for I&T. This position will be located at our Space Systems Sector in Gilbert, AZ. 

The qualified candidate will become part of Northrop Grumman’s Tactical Space Systems.  

This position is defined as a Staff Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (MGSE) design engineer. Mechanical Ground Support Equipment is used to support the integration, test, and launch of spacecraft. As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for engineering the preliminary, conceptual, and detailed design of MGSE components, including the creation of detailed models through drawing release, and the coordination of manufacturing, integration, test, and delivery to I&T.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Lead, mentor, and train a team of engineers
  • Provide technical oversight
  • Responsible for cost and schedule associated to SOW
  • Collaborate with IPT in the development of the delivery schedule
  • Resolve issues and constraints, such as stress, structural integrity, and critical clearances
  • Perform requirements definition, conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations, and support to fabrication/integration
  • Work closely with stress, manufacturing, M&P, and test to develop design requirements, define structural load paths, develop CAD models and prepare engineering drawings to fabricate hardware.
  • Interface with other cross-functional groups, customers, and vendors
  • Provide I&T Sustaining support
  • Responsible for source control drawings, interface control drawings, & installation drawings.
  • Lead and participate in system-level trades to ensure the design meets all physical, mechanical, and environmental requirements while accommodating the required payload, power, propulsion, thermal, communications , and attitude control system requirements
  • Supports Program milestone reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR, etc.) and Gate Closure/Lien Closures
  • Create a culture of trust

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university with 14 Years of engineering experience; OR Master's Degree with 12 Years of engineering experience; OR Ph.D. with 9 Years of engineering experience
  • Prior work experience in space subsystems design and integration, mechanical design integration, or related engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo
  • Candidate should be able to undergo and maintain an active U.S. Government security clearances process: Dept of Defense Top Secret level - OR - SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in MGSE design, fabrication, and proof load testing
  • Experience in structural analysis using hand calculations and Finite Element Methods  
  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance or SCI
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • EVMS/CAM, and Project Management experience

Salary Range: $145,000 USD - $173,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
