We are seeking a Principal Structural Analysis Engineer for the Design Engineering team at Commerce California, where we design and manufacture high performance pressure vessels for use in space applications.  As part of the Payload and Ground Systems Division, the Northrop Grumman Commerce facility is the leading supplier of pressure vessels for space missions in the world.  At the facility we produce a wide variety of pressure vessels supporting a wide variety of missions, both foreign and domestic, commercial, defense, and civil space.  This position is part of the design and analysis engineering team and performs structural analyses of pressure vessel hardware.  This position reports to a Senior Manager of Engineering.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support development of flight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, verification testing, and delivery

  • Assess the structural integrity of pressure vessels utilizing governing equations for preliminary sizing and layouts

  • Perform Finite Element Analysis of pressure vessels and tank assemblies to assess pressure and external load margins

  • Perform fracture analysis using NASGRO / NASFLA program

  • Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment results for internal review boards and external customer design reviews

  • Prepare reports summarizing analytical findings and results

  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Analysis, Quality, Materials, Manufacturing) to create and verify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Support environmental testing, including random, sine, shock, and thermal cycle testing

  • Support assessment and disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and five (5-7) years of related experience

  • Experience with NASTRAN and/or FEMAP/ABAQUS modelling software

  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Must be a US citizen and have the ability to work on ITAR controlled products

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with pressure vessel design and analysis

  • 5-7+ years experience with space flight hardware (design, development, and/or test)

  • Experience with space propulsion products (tanks) or propulsion subsystem design

  • Titanium and metallic structure analysis experience

  • Composites analysis experience

  • Expertise in NASTRAN and/or FEMAP/ABAQUS modelling software

  • Expertise in NASGRO / NSFLA program

  • Knowledge of Siemens NX 11.0+

  • Proficiency with GD&T best practices per ASME Y14.5


Salary Range: $101,400 USD - $152,200 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
