Northrop Grumman Aeronautic Systems has an opening for a Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our South Bay Vehicle Engineering organization. This role will be located in either Redondo Beach or El Segundo, California.

The selected candidate should thrive in a fast-paced work environment with high expectations, significantly diverse assignments, and collaborative/team settings across all levels. In this role, you will be responsible for collaborating across a multi-disciplinary team of engineers responsible for developing, modifying, and maintaining aircraft design configurations using current engineering practices and standards. Responsibilities for the role include conceptual design, preliminary / layout, and detail design, drawing release, design review presentations, and support to fabrication. The selected candidate must be an experienced designer who can flourish in a dynamic work environment. The candidate will work on complex technical problems that require innovative solutions. The candidate will support functional, sector, and program long range business goals and objectives, lead a project and task through to completion and mentor to support knowledge management.The candidate will need to have excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, train and collaborate with team of engineers.

  • Provide technical oversight and technical support to other disciplines as required.

  • Responsible for cost and schedule associated to SOW.

  • Lead internal program, customer and/or supplier technical exchange meetings and/or formal program milestone reviews to provide and/or obtain progress status updates.

  • Interface with relevant stakeholders, including cross-functional teams, customers, and suppliers, to ensure robust and maintainable configurations are produced.

  • Capture best practices in designing various aircraft systems including composites and/or metallic and their associated requirements for composites and/or metallic structures.

  • Perform design related tasks utilizing the NX and Teamcenter tool suite.

  • Integrate subsystems components and structural configurations into various types of aircraft applications.

  • Perform GD&T activities associated with producing and manufacturing of designs.

  • Ability to design for affordability leveraging Agile methodology.

  • Evaluate and provide proposal technical inputs and cost estimation.

  • Leverage project management to balance schedule, cost and quality.

Basic Qualifications Senior Principal Engineer Mechanical:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline AND 9 years of related professional/military experience in mechanical/aerospace engineering; OR Master’s degree in a STEM discipline from AND 7 years of related professional/military experience in mechanical/aerospace engineering.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret clearance or higher.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Special Access Programs (SAP).

  • Experience with aircraft design concepts and industry standard modeling software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing aircraft primary and secondary structures.

  • Expertise with NX, Fibersim, and Teamcenter PLM, knowledge of CATIA

  • Experience with advanced manufacturing processes.

  • Participation in multiple design and analysis cycles in aircraft development programs.

  • EVMS/CAM, and Project Management experience.

  • Experience establishing and producing complex composite structural components and/or assemblies

  • Experience with complex composite sandwich structures

  • Experience with rapid development and fabrication processes

This position reports to El Segundo, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Redondo Beach, CA, CA, USA.


Salary Range: $117,700 USD - $176,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
