Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Structural Engineer 4 to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals in Redondo Beach, CA.  

 

Responsibilities: Not limited to demonstrating extensive technical expertise applied to antennas and RF products and demonstrates full knowledge of other related disciplines. Effective communication and demonstrated ability to clearly present technical approaches regarding the state-of-the-art Antenna technology domains is essential to the role. Will span analyzing, researching and developing structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, and electronics. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowable and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Primary scope will involve development of mission-enabling Antenna products for space. 

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Antenna Mechanical Design, Analysis, with supporting manufacturing, electrical and environmental testing with consultant level direction.  

  • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of Antenna Mechanical Design 

  • Completed work on antenna products is reviewed from a relatively long- term perspective, for program and / or functional homeroom desired results on Long Range Strategic Plan 

  • Demonstrate knowledge in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, tolerance analysis, DC and RF cable and harness design, waveguide design, and design of metallic and composite structures for space flight. 

  • Incorporation of lessons learned and experiences in design/analysis, innovative thinking, and familiarity with the state-of-the-art 

  • Communication & information flow to project team and functional homeroom management, as well as fulfilling reporting requirements to customer & program management 

  • Identifying and realizing opportunities to reduce cost and improve processes 

  • Applying non-linear FEA methodologies in context 

  • Leads adjudication of non-conforming hardware  

  • Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters 

  • Mentorship of the next generation of technical associates

 This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

 Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) field from an accredited institution and 9 years of experience with designing mechanical structures for space flight OR 7 years of experience with a Master of Science degree OR 4 years of experience with a PhD. 

  • Candidate must have a U.S. Government TOP SECRET/SCI security clearance 

  • Expertise with FEMAP FEM tool with Nastran solver 

  • Documentation of structural analysis reports using Mathcad 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution and at least 10 years of engineering experience in an aerospace environment producing flight hardware. 

  • Experience with Antenna system architecture development, Antenna system synthesis based on requirements flow down. 

  • Candidate has, and can maintain, at least ONE of the following active U.S. Government security clearances:

Salary Range: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
