The Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Advanced Processing Solutions Business pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines the leading edge of exotic new technologies, and drives advances in the sciences. One of our most challenging new fields is Transformational Computing, which combines the unique properties of superconductivity and quantum mechanics to develop radical new energy-efficient computing systems. Our team is chartered with providing the skills to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law, advancing development of computer architectures, processing/memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems. You’ll work in a R&D environment alongside a broad array of scientists and engineers to make these processing solutions a reality and deliver remarkable new advantages to the warfighter.

The Networked Information Solutions (NIS), Advanced Processing Solutions business is seeking Structural Engineer to join our team.

This position requires work onsite at our Advanced Technologies Laboratory located in Linthicum, MD.


  • Under minimal direction, perform a variety of structural engineering tasks of an analysis, design, or test nature
  • Conduct linear finite element static, vibration, modal, direct frequency response, and response spectra analyses.
  • Perform nonlinear static and transient finite element analyses.
  • Perform classical structural analysis
  • Devise and execute tests for detecting vibratory loads in a high isolation environment
  • Select and/or modify proven methods, mathematical formulas, previous design and test information, handbook data or other available information related to the assignment.
  • Take direction and address issues using skills obtained in the field of engineering, or related structural integrity sciences as it relates to cryogenic test platforms
  • Use classical stress and strain methods and software to predict structural integrity and failure and design components to survive worst-case loading conditions
  • Learn and develop proficiency with structural analysis software (COMSOL, Solidworks Structural, FEMAP, NX NASTRAN, MathCAD, etc)

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Structural Engineer:

  • Bachelor's of Science in: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics or related field specializing structural and vibration analysis with 5 years of experience, a M.S Degree with 3 years of experience; 0 years with a PhD.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with classical structural and finite element analysis
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance. Clearance not required to start

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Specialization in high sensitivity vibration modeling and experimental techniques
  • Experience in modeling mechanical structures in; Solidworks, NX or similar.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph
  • Experience in structural analysis at cryogenic temperatures including a deep understanding of material property variability as a function of temperature.
  • Software experience: COMSOL, Solidworks Structural, FEMAP, NX NASTRAN, MathCAD

Salary Range: $99,800 USD - $149,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
