Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) seeks an Mechanical Engineering Manager 1 or Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 in the Amherst Systems business unit within the Navigation, Targeting, and Survivability division.  This position is located in Buffalo, NY. This is a dual-hat position responsible for both personnel management (~ 50% of time) for a multi-disciplined team of 9 or more engineers/designers and technical/program responsibilities (~50% of time). This position is located in Buffalo, NY.

The Mechanical Engineering organization located in Buffalo, NY researches, designs, builds, and tests a variety of electronic components and systems used in the development, test, validation, and training of Electronic Warfare hardware, software, and personnel to ensure the safety and success of the warfighter.

The current organization consist of 6 Mechanical Engineers and 3 Mechanical Designers(Drafters) ranging from entry level through highly experienced staff. In addition to managing the team, the Manager will be required to support and as needed design and implement specialized test equipment used in the testing of Military Radar, Radar Warning Receivers (RWR), and Jamming systems.

The team with manger support will design and implement electronic equipment racks and enclosures, electronic integrated microwave assemblies or sub-components utilizing transmission line, MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit), and packaged/connectorized RF devices.  The group also provides an opportunity to design ground mobile test and training equipment used to train pilots and electronic warfare officers at training ranges throughout the country.  This engineering group is also responsible for air flow, thermal, structural, and component Engineering.

What You'll Get To Do:

The Mechanical Engineering Manager will lead design modeling and drawing efforts utilizing Siemens NX and SolidWorks.  AutoCad may be used less frequently.  The Mechanical Engineering Manager will lead, create, or update layout drawings, fabrication drawings and engineering change orders, give design review presentations, and perform analysis (e.g. strength of materials, cooling).  They will also lead Mechanical Engineers and Designers and manage work products including schedule and budgets.  Other tasks will include manufacturing engineering liaison support, working with suppliers, hardware testing, and supporting Integration and Test (I&T) operations.

 The manager will be required to communicate with internal customers as well as external customers and suppliers. In addition, he/she must be able to support his/her team and Manufacturing Engineering and Operations as significant portions of fabrication and assembly occur onsite. He/she must be able to work as part of a multifunctional team working within schedule and budget constraints.

Roles & Responsibilities:

 Management

  • Functional oversight for a team of Mechanical Engineers and Designers
  • Staffing and workload forecast; employee inclusion, knowledge transfer, engagement, mentoring and career development; identification and training of employee skills required to successfully execute on programs.
  • Execution of employee performance review processes and performance improvement plans.
  • Recruiting, sourcing, onboarding, performance management and contract maintenance for contractors working in the business area as required.
  • Issue identification/reporting as well as status reporting up the engineering and program management chains.
  • Engage in the preparation of department-related meetings.
  • Generate and manage department operating budgets.

Technical

  • Technical contributor / leader in a program role
  • Create technical solutions to the challenges from high density and power electronics packaging
  • Design modeling and drawing utilizing Siemens NX and SolidWorks.
  • Create, or update layout drawings, fabrication drawings, and engineering change orders..
  • Create and deliver design review presentations.
  • Manufacturing engineering liaison support, working with suppliers, hardware testing, and supporting Integration and Test (I&T) operations.
  • Perform air flow, thermal, and structural analysis.
  • Component Engineering.
  • Generate technical write-ups, diagrams, and estimates for proposals.

 Basic Qualifications Mechanical Engineering Manager 1:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related STEM field and 5 years of experience or a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM field and 3 years of experience
  • Extensive Working knowledge and aptitude of mechanical systems and hardware packaging design.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to lead a group of cross functional Engineers and Designers
  • Confidence and proficiency presenting to peers, management (professors), and customers.
  • Ability for infrequent travel (<10%)
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) secret clearance.
  • Proven demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to effectively lead teams across multiple engineering disciplines and programs.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.

  • Confidence and proficiency presenting to peers, management (professors), and customers.
  • Ability for infrequent travel (<10%)
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) secret clearance.
  • Proven demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to effectively lead teams across multiple engineering disciplines and programs.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading in multi-functional team environments.
  • Experience managing people.
  • Demonstrated capability to make difficult decisions that impact team direction and team performance outcomes.
  • Experience in activities related to Electronic Warfare systems development, use, testing, and support.
  • Active U.S. DOD Secret Clearance
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Management, Engineering Leadership, or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of programing languages, especially Microsoft Excel VBA.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools (Siemens NX, SolidWorks).
  • Working knowledge of thermal (ANSYS ICEPAK) and structural modeling.
  • Experience in a Department of Defense (DoD) environment.
  • Sheet metal design.
  • Large welded structures design.
  • Ground mobile equipment design, vehicles, and trailered systems .


Salary Range: $101,800 USD - $152,800 USD
Salary Range 2: $122,300 USD - $183,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
