Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Structural Testing and Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, UT.

Our team works with experienced engineers, supporting sophisticated structural analysis and testing of both composite and metallic materials of aerospace structures. We engineer the latest structures for military/commercial aircraft and launch structures, and are leaders in next-generation structure development. Responsibilities:
  • Conduct structural mechanical testing from small scale coupons to large scale sub-components
  • Perform structural analysis including static, dynamics, buckling and fatigue analysis.
  • Build Finite Element Models (FEMs) using CAD geometry, meshing, and running solutions using commercial software (Femap, Abaqus, Nastran)
  • Compute margins of safety to size parts using structural analysis methods
  • Conduct structural and material tests on composite and metallic specimens/components to evaluate if parts meet acceptance test criteria
  • Develop, maintain, and execute test plans for products ranging from components to sub-assemblies to vehicle-level systems.
  • Operate and/or support complex test facility systems (e.g MTS and Instron machines) and help direct a team of technicians to execute test processes
  • Analyze and review data to ensure that hardware is operating as expected utilizing numerical data analysis tools to interpret test results
  • Write test reports that include test results and conclusions based on the data collected 
  • Directly support testing, such as material preparation and testing, testing using an Instron and other material testing equipment, metallurgical lab sample cutting, mounting, polishing and evaluation.

This role may be filled at an Engineer or Principal Engineer level based on the qualifications below.

Basic QualificationsStructural Engineer
  • Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 2 years engineering work experience -OR- Masters in a STEM field and 0 years
  • Familiarity with the design of experiments (DOE), Robust Engineering, and statistical data analysis or process control
  • Experience in structural and material testing and characterization
  • Planning of experiments and interpret/reduce data collected from experiments
  • Experience building Finite Element Models (FEM) using CAD geometry, meshing, and running solutions is a plus
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Clearance & Special Program Access
Principal Engineer
  • Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 5 years engineering work experience -OR- Masters in a STEM field and 3 years
  • Familiarity with the design of experiments (DOE), Robust Engineering, and statistical data analysis or process control
  • Experience in structural and material testing and characterization
  • Planning of experiments and interpret/reduce data collected from experiments
  • Experience building Finite Element Models (FEM) using CAD geometry, meshing, and running solutions is a plus
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Clearance & Special Program Access
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance
  • Experience with any of the following software packages: Siemens NX, MATLAB, ANSYS, Abaqus CAE, Femap, Nastran
  • Experience with scripting for software packages such as MATLAB and Python
  • Composite structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience
  • Knowledge of composite materials
  • Experience in test planning, test support, and data reduction


Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
