Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Structural/Damage Tolerance Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Clearfield, UT.

Our team works with experienced engineers, supporting sophisticated structural analysis of both composite and metallic materials of aerospace structures. We engineer the latest composite structures for military/commercial aircraft and launch structures, and are leaders in next-generation structure development. Responsibilities:
  • Perform structural analysis including static, dynamics, stability, and damage tolerance analysis.
  • Build Finite Element Models (FEMs) using CAD geometry, meshing, and running solutions
  • Able to manipulate large scale finite element models
  • Compute margins using appropriate analysis methods
  • Perform complex analyses applying Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) to evaluate damage-tolerant designs
  • Server as the point of contract for fracture control board responsible for fracture critical parts and components
  • Serve as Materials Engineering subject matter expert for all engineering activities related to fracture mechanics and design for fatigue and fracture.
  • Derive material property requirements for damage tolerant design and expected life, maximum allowable flaw size based on the loading spectra for given applications.
  • Able to support material review board (MRB) and nonconformance to ensure we have sound structural and damage tolerance substantiation

We are part of the ACS program and work closely with research & development engineers, engineering technicians, structure design and analysis engineers, and process engineers to provide state-of-the-art solutions to the most engaging problems.

We work a 9/80 work week, which gives us every other Friday off to pursue passions outside the office.

This role may be filled at a Structural Engineer or Principal Structural Engineer based on the qualifications outlined below.

Basic QualificationsStructural Engineer
  • Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 2 years engineering work experience -OR- Masters in a STEM field
  • Experience with finite element modeling (FEM)  
  • Experience with AFGROW
  • Experience in performing static, dynamic, fatigue, damage tolerance analysis of both composites and metallic materials
  • Experience in writing technical reports and presenting data in a clear and concise manner 
  • Active DOD Secret Clearance & ability to obtain Special Program Access
Principal Structural Engineer
  • Bachelors degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) and 5 years engineering work experience -OR- Masters in a STEM field and 3 years of engineering work experience
  • Experience with finite element modeling (FEM) 
  • Experience with AFGROW
  • Experience in performing static, dynamic, fatigue, damage tolerance analysis of both composites and metallic materials
  • Experience in writing technical reports and presenting data in a clear and concise manner 
  • Active DOD Secret Clearance & ability to obtain Special Program Access
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with any of the following software packages: Siemens NX, AFGROW, ANSYS Abaqus CAE, Femap, Nastran
  • Experience with scripting for software packages such as MATLAB and Siemens NX
  • Metallic and Composite damage tolerance/structural Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience
  • Knowledge of composite materials
  • Experience in test planning, test support, and data reduction
  • Experience supporting MRB

Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
