Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsions Division is currently seeking an experienced Structural Engineer/Principal Structural Engineer to provide leadership to our Nozzle Design team in our Promontory offices.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Nozzle Structural Engineer is responsible for designing solid rocket motor nozzles for a variety of government and commercial programs.   This individual will use their engineering knowledge and creativity to develop design solutions that meet technical, cost, and schedule requirements.  

Job Duties: 

  • Provide accurate, on-time drawings and specifications for next generation nozzle designs

  • Conduct and lead trade studies

  • Define, develop, and qualify design changes

  • Perform preliminary structural analysis of nozzle components

  • Provide technical guidance and direction to engineering teams in the design, test, and production phases of a project

  • Interact with development teams (including specialists in Manufacturing, Quality, Safety, Thermal, Structural, Materials, and Test) to certify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)

  • Develop and present materials for project related briefings including design reviews to be given to internal and external customers

  • Perform anomaly resolution and conduct special studies

  • Participate in postfire evaluations of nozzle hardware

Experience Requirements:  This requisition maybe filled at either Engineer level or Principal Engineer level. 

  • Minimum Experience: The minimum experience for the Engineer level is 2 years with BS degree or 0 years with MS degree.

  • The minimum experience for the Principal Engineer level is 5 years with BS degree or 3 years with MS degree.

Experience Preferred: 

  • Previous nozzle design, rocket motor design, or aerospace design experience

  • NX modeling and drawing experience

  • Understanding of manufacturing and inspection processes

  • Design and analysis experience with bolted joints, metallic and composite structures, and bonded assemblies

  • Tolerance analysis

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Broad understanding of mechanical design, structural analysis, material behavior, and heat transfer

  • Strong skills in 3D modeling, mechanical drawings, and GD&T

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

Education/Certifications: 

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering


Salary Range: $73,400 USD - $110,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
