NG Space Systems – Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Principal Structural Analyst for our Tool Engineering team located at the Promontory (Brigham), Utah facility.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Principal Tooling Structural Analyst is responsible for performing structural analyses of Tooling and unique equipment utilized in rocket motor manufacturing, testing, transportation, qualification, and other equipment involved with all plant operations.  Candidate will additionally be responsible for performing peer reviews of other team members’ analyses.

Job Duties:

  • Assess the structural integrity of special tooling and ground support equipment used to manufacture rocket propulsion systems using traditional closed form solutions as well as finite element techniques

  • Peer review team members analysis reports.  Provide constructive feedback and help educate peers on proper and efficient usage of closed form calculations and FEA analysis.

  • Prepare reports and memos documenting structural assessment activities and results

  • Prepare and make presentations summarizing structural assessment results for internal and customer reviews

  • Perform assessment and develop disposition of discrepant tooling or ground support equipment that is structure critical.

  • Interact with Tool Designers and Tool Engineers in the development and design of special tooling and ground support equipment.  Coordinate with team members to ensure that special tooling design is structurally adequate and meets all internal and external requirements.

  • Understand special tooling usage and process through coordination with the Process/Tool Engineer in order to identify failure modes and all applicable loading scenarios that require analysis.

Experience Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of ANSYS workbench, Finite Element Analysis, structural analysis and their application

  • Strong background in design and modeling software

  • Strong and demonstrated communication, planning, project management and presentation skills

  • Experience with manufacturing and mechanical systems is a plus

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience with CAD software is required

  • Experience with Siemens NX CAD Software is preferred

  • Experience with ANSYS workbench is preferred.

  • Research/course work in fatigue analysis is a plus

  • Knowledge of machine shop and fabrication manufacturing methods is preferred

  • Experience with MathCAD Prime or similar software is preferred

  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects with Engineers and Designers

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to create analysis of structures and reports in a timely manner, while ensuring structural requirements are met

Education/Certifications

  • MS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with emphasis in structural analysis, solid mechanics, or finite element theory, and at least 3 years of related experience or

  • BS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering will be considered with more than 5 years of experience.

    • Position may be filled at a higher level requiring:

      • MS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with emphasis in structural analysis, solid mechanics, or finite element theory, and at least 7 years of related experience or

      • BS Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering will be considered with more than 9 years of experience.


Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
