Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Propulsion Division is currently looking for a Principal/Sr. Principal Energetics Safety Engineer to work in our Promontory or Bacchus (Magna), UT location.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Successful Candidate is responsible for:

  • Supporting explosive site planning, updating, reviews and submission for approvals. EFOSS and Facility Site Request administration.

  • Knowledge and experience with DOD siting and explosive effects (thermal/fragment/overpressure) modeling and analysis.

  • Supporting the Energetics Safety Officer to serve as a liaison and assist with DCMA customer requests for information (RFI).  Serve as a POC (point of contact) for Pre-Award, Post-Award, and Indemnification Surveys.

  • Demonstrating an ability to interact effectively with internal/external compliance regulators with a high degree of proficiency.  This includes resolving customer safety concerns and presenting progress on safety audits, corrective actions, and effectiveness reviews.

  • Working with other disciplines (e.g., Engineering, Operations, Environmental, Occupational Medicine, Infrastructure, etc.) to ensure implemented protocols are being followed

  • Assisting in related training courses.  This may be preparation of web based training, or creation and delivery of instructor led training.

  • Reviewing process changes in work areas to assess additional risk and determine the appropriate levels of approval

  • Delivering presentations to facilitate process change or summarize new processes

  • Developing team project milestones, provide updates, track and meet project deadlines

  • Assisting with management of the Energetics Safety Program by influence across all departments to develop, plan, schedule, complete, analyze, track and follow-up on process assessments, both independently and with groups.

Additional assignments and areas of focus will vary, and work will be accomplished across all of Propulsion Systems under the direction of the Propulsion Systems Chief Energetics Safety Officer. Some travel to other Propulsion Systems locations and possibly customer sites may be required.  Professional training and certifications during the job will be identified and encouraged.  This position may be based out of Magna, UT or Promontory, UT locations.

Education/Certifications/Experience

  • BS in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or related technical field required, 5 Years with BS; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD

  • Position can be filled one level higher, 9 Years with BS; 7 Years with Masters; 4 Years with PhD

  • Experience gained in energetic, explosive or other high consequence industrial processing or laboratory environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.  Comfortable navigating ambiguity and interacting professionally with compliance regulators and customers

  • Experience and training with DOD, Navy, and NASA safety regulations are a plus

  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis and Corrective/Preventative Action determination

  • Working knowledge of industrial (OSHA), DOD, Propulsion Systems and other safety requirements, documents, and standards

  • Experience leading team projects

  • Must be a US Citizen or Person

  • Must be able to pass an ATF Employee Possessor background check and the ability to obtain a DOD Secret clearance

    This position reports to Magna, UT, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Corinne, UT, UT, USA.


    Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
    Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

    Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
