Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector designs, builds and delivers space and defense systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

The Tactical Space Systems Division is seeking a Staff Thermal Engineer to join its team to provide leadership and expertise in Active Thermal Control Systems and components for Satellite and/or Space craft programs.

Responsibilities include:

The Staff Active Thermal Control Engineer will work with other engineers across sub-systems to lead the design, development and test of Active Thermal Control Systems serving as a subject matter expert for one or more satellite/spacecraft programs providing discipline leadership and expertise.   As a sub-system lead the Staff Active Thermal Control Engineer will provide leadership and mentoring of less experienced staff, and work across organizations to identify and obtain relevant skillsets in support of the active thermal sub-system.   The Staff Active Thermal Control Engineer should be capable of top-level sub-system architecture (block diagram) as well as detail design including hand and software analysis capability, component selection and procurements leadership for relevant sub-system components and/or hardware.  This position requires going beyond thermal analysis responsibilities working as a complete Thermal Engineer with overall responsibility for the sub-system including close and continuing contact with program management, contracts/sub-contracts, customers and other engineering disciplines requiring strong communication, leadership and planning skills in addition to technical proficiency.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leadership of one or more spacecraft/satellite active thermal systems including requirements definition, and performance capability determination.
  • Pressure and temperature analysis of thermal-fluid systems.
  • Experience in selection and procurement of hardware such as pumps, valves, radiators, cold plates, heaters and heat exchangers.
  • General mentorship, guidance, and support to less experienced staff supporting thermal engineering tasks.
  • Support the Capital procurement process by recommending tools, equipment, and facilities, needed to support Active Thermal Products development and test.
  • Support Mechanical IRAD initiatives related to passive and active thermal systems.
  • Understanding of markets, customers and applications for Space Active Thermal Control Products helping contribute to overall TSSD Mechanical Engineering vision and purpose for TSSD Thermal Engineering.

Basic Qualifications:

- Prior experience in the design, development and/or test of passive and active thermal control systems.

- Experience using thermal analysis tools such as (MSC SINDA, SINDA/FLUINT, Thermal Desktop)

- Prior experience leading tasks/projects and/or teams

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Demonstrated ability to assess and assign priorities for self and team, delegating tasks as appropriate

- Ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, program managers, and peers.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent and a minimum of 14 years experience with BS; 12 Years

with Masters; 9 Years with PhD.

- ~10% Travel required with potential for greater occasional travel as required for vendor monitoring and/or sub-system integration and test activities.

- An ability to obtain a DoD security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

- Previous ATCS system architecture development

- High proficiency in analytical skills (hand calc and software) to provide a strong technical knowledge base

- Experience with the fundamentals of spacecraft design

- Experience with thermal vacuum test planning and execution including model validation and correlation efforts.

- Prior Cost Account Management (CAM) experience including EVMS reporting responsibility

- Prior experience in preparation of performance specification and statements of work for subcontract system and/or component procurements

- Prior experience with requirements for human rated spacecraft

- Previous demonstrated history supporting multiple parallel activities or tasks (multi-tasking)

-  Ability to work on-site at the Gilbert, AZ or Dulles, VA campus a minimum of 2 days per week.

- Active DoD TS Clearance or ability to obtain one.

Salary Range: $161,000 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
