The Guidance Navigation and Controls team is hiring for a Manager GNC Engineer 3 within the Launch Vehicle business unit located in Chandler, AZ.

GNC is designing and analyzing rocket navigation and control systems for a mix of DoD, NASA, and commercial customers.

Essential Functions:

  • The GNC manager will oversee a group of engineers that design, develop, implement, verify and test algorithms and software and simulation tools to perform guidance, navigation and control of missiles, launch vehicles and upper stages during powered and coast phases of launch, flight, earth orbit, interplanetary cruise and orbital insertion, as well as during staging events.

  • Management of vehicle six degree of freedom simulation.

  • Guidance functions include the formulation of specific equations to achieve a desired position, orientation or orbit in space.

  • Responsible for providing priority guidance, navigation and control technical contributions for a missile defense targets program.

  • Control design and analyses processes consist of the development of the control laws and hardware and software requirements for aircraft, launch vehicles and/or spacecraft.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 9 years of related engineering experience; OR a Master’s degree in STEM with 7 years of related engineering experience, or a PhD in STEM with 4 years of related engineering experience

  • Ability to obtain Security Clearance

  • Experience with guidance, control and simulation of launch vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience managing people

  • Experience with the C++ and Python programming languages

  • Experience with the Linux Operating System

  • Familiarity with rocket motor propelled vehicle trajectory design and customer provided requirement analysis in a simulation environment

  • Proven experience with autopilot and guidance algorithm design and actuator subsystems


Salary Range: $152,100 USD - $228,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
