Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems Sector, Strategic Force Programs Business Unit in Azusa CA, is seeking a Software Engineering Manager 2 to join our software management team. This role will report on-site daily. We can accommodate partial teleworking, but this is fully dependent upon business/program/team need.

The candidate will provide Functional homeroom leadership for a team of software engineers performing on various space remote sensing related programs and projects, including IR&D and Ground, across various software engineering disciplines and specialties. It is expected that the Functional leadership role will comprise 15% to 20% of the candidate's time. The candidate must demonstrate exemplary professionalism and composure, driven to cultivate and safeguard our DE&I culture, demonstrated ability to develop and lead talented and diverse teams with engaged direct reports, and demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the software development lifecycle.

The ideal candidate is expected to demonstrate mentoring capability, excellent 2-way communication, and solid understanding of software processes and metrics. The candidate is expected to make decisions that impact the organization’s performance, operations, and services. They will be expected to comprehend complex information, analyze challenging problems and develop quality solutions.

In this role, the selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead a team of 12-15 software engineers of various experience and specialties
  • Provide direct reports with career development guidance, mentoring and coaching, and drive employee engagement
  • Partner with programs regarding staffing, proficiency development, workload forecasting, and technical oversight and performance of their direct reports
  • Perform effective recruitment, retention risk analysis and retention actions for section members
  • Prepare and deliver performance evaluations to employees, evaluating/recommending employees for promotions, evaluating salaries and partnering with Human Resources on potential adjustments, assisting employees in preparing performance goals, providing career guidance to employees and counseling employees on their performance as necessary 
  • Develop and improve personnel and organizational technical proficiencies, through activities including mentoring and coaching
  • Ensure process alignment of the work of direct reports, support program milestone reviews and deep dives, and assists in development and implementation of Business Unit (BU) and Divisional objectives
  • Effectively partner with managers of the other engineering disciplines, program managers, and IPT leads
  • Champion change within the organization, to achieve competitive advantage for the, BU, division and sector
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the capability to innovate while challenging traditional ways of doing business.
  • Demonstrate abilities to cultivate highly engaged, diverse and inclusive teams
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal skills are required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics)
  • Minimum of 9 years experience in software engineering or related experience
  • Experience in technical leadership or management
  • Must be familiar with all phases of the software development life-cycle
  • Knowledge of one or more Agile methodologies
  • Knowledge of software requirements decomposition and software design
  • Proficiency in C++ or similar general-purpose programming language
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; strong interpersonal and analytic skills
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance with ability to obtain and maintain program access. U.S. Citizenship is required.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in leadership role in industry
  • Expertise in DevOps and Agile software development practices and methods, Object Oriented and Model-Based Engineering
  • SCRUM Product Owner or Scrum Master Certification or experience in a SCRUM Product Owner or Scrum Master role
  • Experience with the Atlassian Tool Suite
  • Demonstrated ability to implement process improvement, streamline activities, and develop efficiencies
  • Demonstrated experience in software requirements analysis, software architecture and design, implementation/development, integration and verification
  • Demonstrated coaching experience/skills
  • Experience in developing or reviewing proposal inputs (task descriptions and basis of estimates)
  • Experience with developing embedded software systems or complex software applications
  • Active DoD Top Secret and/or SCI access

Salary Range: $147,800 USD - $221,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
