The Artificial Intelligence and Analytics Department at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join our team as an AI Engineering Manager 1 or 2. This position is fully on-site at our Woodland Hills, CA office. This position is split between 20% functional management and 80% direct program support, with the program support being a combination of technical and managerial responsibilities. The functional management role involves personnel management of a group of engineers including career development, staffing, goal setting, performance reviews, and compensation planning. The technical role will focus on algorithm development, data analytics, and subject matter expertise across multiple domains of physics-based phenomenological exploitation of data.

What You’ll Get to Do:

  • Probe large quantities of sensor data with signal processing and advanced data analytics to uncover, understand, and exploit complex phenomenology
  • Research and develop innovative statistical learning models for complex data problems to identify opportunities through various statistical, mining, algorithmic, and visualization techniques or more advanced methods such as artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Assist in the development and implementation of department vision and strategies to drive employee engagement; improve hiring, development, training and retention of top talent; balance process compliance against innovation; and reduce bureaucracy
  • Manage personnel assignments in a highly dynamic and fast-paced research environment
  • Conduct performance and salary reviews
  • Mentor, challenge, and identify opportunities for team members to develop skills needed to pursue tailored career/development paths
  • Develop and implement strong processes with emphasis on quantitative management, continuous improvement, and usage of common processes across programs, as appropriate
  • Ensure organizational compliance with corporate/sector/organizational policies/procedures
  • Provide management guidance to achieve outstanding cost, schedule and technical performance.
  • Responsible for technical guidance and oversight in developing technical and cost proposals

Basic Qualifications for Manager AI Engineering Level 1:

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Bachelor’s of Science in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 5 years of progressively increasing responsibility and engineering experience or a Master’s of Science in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 3 years of progressive engineering experience.
  • Experienced in the development of scientific data exploitation systems, including analysis of large data sets, algorithm development, and working with software teams to transition algorithms to the field.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills
  • A proven track record of leading a team of engineering, establishing strong cross-functional relationships, and managing stakeholder expectations (internal and external)
  • This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a Top Secret and additional project-specific clearance.

  • Bachelor’s of Science in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 9 years of progressively increasing responsibility and engineering experience or a Master’s of Science in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 7 years of progressively increasing engineering experience, or 4 years of experience with a Ph.D.
  • Experienced in the development of scientific data exploitation systems, including analysis of large data sets, algorithm development, and working with software teams to transition algorithms to the field.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills
  • A proven track record of leading a team of engineering, establishing strong cross-functional relationships, and managing stakeholder expectations (internal and external)
  • This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a Top Secret and additional project-specific clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s of Science or Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline
  • Experience in any of the following areas is highly desired: data analysis, artificial intelligence/machine learning, signal processing, statistical decision theory, modeling and simulation, algorithm development, particularly as applied to complex sensor systems and data.
  • Experience as Principal Investigator on algorithm development or data analytics programs
  • Proficiency with scientific prototyping languages such as MATLAB or Python
  • Familiarity with signal processing algorithm design and implementation in C and/or C++, and real-time parallel processing.
  • Holds an active Top Secret clearance.


Salary Range: $123,200 USD - $184,800 USD
Salary Range 2: $147,800 USD - $221,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
