Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Sector (NGMS) is seeking a Staff Embedded C/C++ Software Engineer to join our Secure Processing team within the Software Technologies Organization.

The selected candidate will lead multiple teams of engineers in technical and business priorities in the exciting area of custom ASIC development. Technical solutions to be overseen include system on a chip (SoC) design, development, and implementation. This requisition supports multiple technical leadership positions on our critical programs.

The Staff Embedded Software Engineer will join a team of engineers performing new feature development and enhancements, providing secure, embedded solutions to many customer platforms. The selected engineer will oversee and guide the design, development, and integration of complex software solutions in a rapid-pace Agile environment. Primary software solutions in development include C/C++ device drivers, middleware, and application development for Linux and/or VxWorks Platforms. The engineer will interface with other architects and systems engineers to understand and define technical specifications. The engineer will help identify technical risks and report status within Agile program activities to more senior leaders.

This position is accepting applications for Linthicum, MD or Morrisville, NC.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on the qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills, including experience working with customers and senior technical staff.

  • Strong Agile practice familiarity and leadership

  • A minimum of 14 years of experience in software development or programming, mainly using C/C++ (12 years with MS; 9 years with Ph.D.)

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline. In place of a STEM degree, two additional years of experience is required.

  • ACTIVE US DoD clearance at the Secret level or higher, or the ability to obtain one.

  • Hands-on experience working in embedded real-time operating systems, both kernel and application side development (e.g., Linux, VxWorks, ZephyrOS, FreeRTOS, Greenhills Integrity)

  • Strong background in computer operating systems theory and computer architecture theory

  • Strong HW/SW integration skills

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Tools: Git, Atlassian (BitBucket, Confluence, Jira), Jenkins, static & dynamic code analysis (i.e., SonarQube)

  • Experience developing boot software (First stage bootloader, U-boot, UEFI, etc.) for custom boards

  • System Boot experience (barebox, uboot, UEFI, BIOS)

  • Applied cryptography and middleware experience (e.g., OpenSSL, TLS)

  • Bare metal development

  • Experience with computer organization for x86-64, ARMv8-A, or RISC-V ISA's

  • Modifying and integrating open-source software

  • DevOps practices and tools.

This position reports to Linthicum, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Morrisville, NC, NC, USA.


Salary Range: $153,600 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
