Northrop Grumman is currently seeking an Avionics Software Engineer Level 3 or 4 - Simulink/Matlab/C/C++Sr Principal Engineer Embedded Software for a remote position with ability to regularly travel to Elkton, Maryland or Sunnyvale, California locations as required for lab work.

The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for NASA and a wide variety of Government and commercial customers.  The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The position is specifically for the Avionics group at the Elkton, Maryland location that is responsible for design, development and production of real time embedded systems that provide control authority for solid rocket motor propulsion along with simulation models for avionics packages.

The Sunnyvale, California facility specializes in motion control systems and the design and development of prototype control components such as electromechanical actuators, control electronics, and embedded software and firmware. 

Job Description:

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Senior Principle Software Engineer to lead a group in developing software for simulation and embedded systems and real time Linux test environments. Based on specifications and goal‐oriented objectives, design, develop, create and modify control algorithms and test environments, and verify compliance to system level requirements. Coordinates with members of multi‐functional teams to develop innovative solutions for production test systems, ground support equipment and flight hardware.

This position can be filled at either the Principle Software Engineer Level 3 or Senior Principal Software Engineer Level 4, depending on years of experience and qualifications.

Basic Qualifications Principle Software Engineer Level 3:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Software development, Electrical Engineering (with a controls specialization), or Controls Engineering (or similar degree / experience) from an accredited college with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience; or 3 years professional experience with a related Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering & 0 years.
  • Strong experience with Matlab and Simulink modeling and programming and
  • Strong skillsets in programming in C / C++
  • Defines development test plans and methods to ensure a robust design is achieved and validates the design against customer, internal and regulatory / government requirements.
  • Has strong analytical skills and the ability organize/prioritize job assignments and tasks.
  • Is able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Comfortable in a fast paced, rapidly changing, short turn-around environment.
  • Is able to communicate clearly and effectively to cross-functional team members.  Has strong writing skills and is proficient at documenting design and analysis reports as well as test reports.
  • Position may require occasional travel to meet with various customers, in both government and industry, and to interface with suppliers.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.

  • Defines development test plans and methods to ensure a robust design is achieved and validates the design against customer, internal and regulatory / government requirements.
  • Has strong analytical skills and the ability organize/prioritize job assignments and tasks.
  • Is able to work independently in a team environment. Comfortable in a fast paced, rapidly changing, short turn-around environment as an integrated software product team lead.
  • Is able to communicate clearly and effectively to cross-functional team members.  Has strong writing skills and is proficient at documenting design and analysis reports as well as test reports.
  • Position may require occasional travel to meet with various customers, in both government and industry, and to interface with suppliers.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Applies research to the planning, design, development and testing of control laws and control systems for use in space and military applications.  Is able to develop design solutions to meet difficult performance requirements.
  • Develops detailed specifications from high level design goals and performs analysis of the hardware, system environment and design goals to enable selection and implementation of the desired system topology.
  • Presents assigned work at program technical reviews, proposals, or other technical meetings.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a development team to understand system level interdependencies and design constraints.
  • Experience with Matlab and Simulink creating complex simulations of hardware systems and components. Export Simulink design into autocode to operate in a RTOS environment.
  • Experience with the use of various FPGAs and the development of Real Time multi-threaded code within the corresponding IDE.
  • Experience working in a cross functional environment (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, test engineering, production engineering, etc.) to translate customer requirements and functional block diagrams into realized control models. Review and update control system requirements to meet system level performance objectives. Conduct trade studies and identify and present alternate design options.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering principles
  • Experience with following standards: NPR7150.2, DO-178C, DO-254, CMMI.
  • Knowledge of Open System Architecture (OSA) and Model Based System Engineering (MBSE)

This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location.  Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor

This position reports to Fairfax, VA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 2 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $95,100 USD - $142,700 USD
Salary Range 2: $117,900 USD - $176,900 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
