Join the Civil and Commercial Space business area in a challenging and rewarding role as a Principal/Senior Principal Space craft Systems Engineer. Support space programs designed to further scientific, robotic, or human exploration in Low Earth Orbit and beyond at our Gilbert, AZ campus.  Space craft Systems Engineers are key members of a cross-disciplinary team helping drive the design, development, integration & test, launch, and on-orbit operations of complex space systems and capabilities. As a Space craft Systems Engineer, you will have unique opportunities to witness and take part in the entire engineering lifecycle culminating in the on-orbit delivery of fully mission capable space vehicles to our customers! Programs range from small feasibility studies to medium-sized on-orbit operational spacecraft, technology demonstrations and large-scale human exploration systems.

This Principal/Senior Principal Space craft Systems Engineering position is for an individual-contributor and deliverable/product lead within a multi-disciplinary engineering team. Responsibilities include design, integration, development and testing of space payloads, spacecraft buses, satellites, human-rated spacecraft, and satellite servicing vehicles. Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform requirements development, allocation, verification/validation planning and manage interface definition efforts.

  • Provide on-floor support of integration, testing, and operational readiness of spacecraft and payloads. 

  • Write complex specifications, interface control documents, and engineering reports.

  • Support interface/communication with program, functional and customer leadership. 

  • Lead and prepare trade studies, system sensitivity studies, design optimization studies, system performance assessments, mission analysis and timelines, and CONOPS development.

  • Other tasks may include electrical harness interface design, integration and test development and support, mechanical systems support, Command & Telemetry database development, and space vehicle configuration modeling.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Systems Engineer 3 - BS Engineering degree and 5+ years of experience or master’s degree and 3+ years of experience.

  • Systems Engineer 4 - BS Engineering degree and 9+ years of experience or a master’s degree and 7+ years of experience.

  • Previous engineering experience, preferably on space programs or satellite operations

  • Understanding of Systems Engineering functions

  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and an aptitude for understanding system and subsystem interactions

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • U.S. Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in aerospace systems, spacecraft design, or mission operations

  • Familiarity with electrical systems integration and testing

  • Understanding of spacecraft integration & test, launch, and/or mission operations 

  • Experience in requirements management, system architecture development and CONOPs

  • Requirements Management Tools such as DOORS, Cradle, or CORE, and various analysis engineering tools, such as MATLAB, MATHCAD, and STK

  • Additional experience in any of the following areas is also desired: orbital mechanics, power systems modeling, avionics or digital electronics design, telecommunications design, risk analysis, thermal design and analysis, or integration and testing (either at the spacecraft or payload level)


Salary Range: $90,400 USD - $135,600 USD
Salary Range 2: $112,000 USD - $168,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
