The Payload and Ground Systems organization within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector, Payload & Ground Systems Division, Strategic Force Programs in Azusa CA, is seeking an innovative and motivated Staff Systems Engineer to lead System Engineering efforts in support of space payload technology programs and pursuits.  This position will report on-site daily. We can accommodate partial telework, but this is dependent upon business/program/team need.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide Systems Engineering leadership and direction in a high tempo work environment
  • Serve as the interface to the Program Manager, Chief Engineer, and other IPT leads to coordinate team technical and programmatic status and issues.
  • Build and maintain a culture that empowers employees, establishes personal and team accountability, motivates team performance, encourages development, and supports innovation.
  • Ensure that the team is adhering to sound engineering processes during development in accordance with program and company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Meet business goals of engineering cost and schedule for scope of work as assigned.
  • Develop and execute to project budgets and schedules
  • Serve as the interface to the Engineering Discipline/Department Managers to coordinate staffing requirements and ensure proper skill mix to support team activities.
  • Brief internal and customer leadership on progress of work assigned
  • Develop formal procedures and presentations (ERB/CCB documentation).
  • Track and communicate the team's technical metrics.
  • Lead subsystem and low-level technical reviews.
  • Mentor junior technical contributors.

Additionally, this position will be involved with requirements development, decomposition, verification, measuring system performance, evaluating algorithms, and recommending possible solutions to engineering problems and design.  This Leader will also ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints, perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

The position requires solid payload systems technical knowledge and leadership in EO/IR space payload systems to help establish and execute effective work processes and procedures and provide leadership of systems engineers.

Technical understanding in OPIR payload operations, Mission Requirements, Mission Phenomenology & Simulation is strongly desired.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) & 14+ years of related engineering experience in the payload design of EO/IR payload systems, OR a Master's degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) & 12+ years of related engineering experience in the payload design of EO/IR payload systems, OR PhD degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) & 9+ years of related engineering experience in the payload design of EO/IR payload systems
  • Experience leading a team on a technical development effort or technical sustainment support.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience (team, people, program, project)
  • Capable of working both independently and in a team environment
  • Experience development engineering documentation (requirements, testing, procedures, etc.)
  • Experience with generating or reviewing cost estimates/basis of estimates (BOEs).
  • Active & current DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of leadership experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with the SBIRS Program.
  • Experience as technical lead, Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead, or other engineering leadership role with demonstrated team building, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in all phases of the System Development Life Cycle.
  • Familiarity with commonly used tools in both MS Windows & Unix environments.
  • Experience as a Control Account Manager (CAM).
  • Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM).
  • MBSE experience and system architecture modeling tool(s) experience a plus.
  • Active TS or SCI Clearance.

Salary Range: $156,000 USD - $234,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
