Northrop Grumman Payload & Ground Space Systems is looking for a Staff Systems Engineer Level 5 with experience in payload and optical design, hardware assembly, integration and test, mission engineering and phenomenology, procurement, and business development toward developing and building space qualified payload systems.  This person would be a program senior technical leader and fill chief engineer roles.  The candidate will be working out of our Azusa, CA (primary) and Redondo Beach, CA (secondary) locations. This role will report on-site daily. We can accommodate partial telework, but this is dependent upon business/program/team need.

The candidate will join the System Architecture department senior staff within the System Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) organization and serve as a chief engineer for campus programs. Candidate must have strong technical experience in payload and electrical system design as well as hardware test qualification and verification.  Candidate should have experience with the space system lifecycle of onboard signal processing electronics including board design & manufacturing processes and end to end signal integrity verification.  Candidate should have experience with failure review boards, material review boards, root cause and corrective action techniques, and defect resolution.  Preferred candidates will additionally have experience with visible to infrared focal plane assemblies and imaging technologies with good working experience in driving electro-optical requirements based on customer level mission requirements. 

The candidate will support program execution for all aspects of engineering (hardware/software/support/test) and will lead a multi-disciplined engineering team to ensure compliant technical performance.  In addition, candidate will be a key driver and contributor to the research and development of advanced technologies to support future business capture initiatives.  Candidate will also be called upon to lead the development of new proposal artifacts including technical, management, and cost volumes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field and 14 years of PL design and test experience including developing, building, testing, and fielding space based PL systems
    OR, a Master’s Degree in a STEM field and 12 years of PL design and test experience including developing, building, testing, and fielding space based PL systems
  • 7 years’ experience driving strategic development of technologies based on customer needs
  • 5 years direct interface with customer on shaping program direction
  • Experience in proposal development, schedule development, and cost estimation for PL programs
  • Active and current DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • 20+ years of technical engineering experience in EO/IR PL design and test
  • Active TS/SCI clearance

Salary Range: $161,000 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
