Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector (NGDS) is seeking a Principal Software Systems Architect / Sr. Principal Software Systems Architect to join our growing team of diverse professionals in Manhattan Beach, California or Melbourne, FL.  The selected candidate will take a leading role in migrating legacy software applications to the cloud and work with our engineering team to develop, implement, optimize, and maintain native cloud-based solutions in accordance with best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect efficient, high speed, reliable cloud solution for legacy software applications
  • Apply IaC to deploy and manage cloud infrastructure
  • Define migration path for legacy software applications to become cloud-native
  • Guide migration and implementation of new cloud technologies and initiatives
  • Ensure performance capabilities and security of new software systems and architectures are consistent with mission requirements
  • Support trade studies, CONOPs development, whitepapers

Basic Qualifications for Principal Systems Engineer:

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an ABET-accredited university and 5+ years of experience in software engineering in a cloud environment OR
    • Master’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an ABET-accredited university and 3+ years of experience in software engineering in a cloud environment
  • Must be able to attain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
  • Must be able to attain and maintain Special Access Programs (SAP)
  • Experience architecting, designing, and deploying cloud-native software solutions
  • Experience leading a migration of legacy software systems to a cloud environment, including transformation to cloud-native
  • Experience with Cloud infrastructure technology, e.g., Azure, AWS, Google
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes Container Strategies and Orchestration
  • Experience working in Agile software development environment
  • Ability to work on-site in Manhattan Beach (CA) or Melbourne (FL)

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an ABET-accredited university and 8+ years of experience in software engineering in a cloud environment OR
    • Master’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an ABET-accredited university and 6+ years of experience in software engineering in a cloud environment
  • Must be able to attain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
  • Must be able to attain and maintain Special Access Programs (SAP)
  • Experience architecting, designing, and deploying cloud-native software solutions
  • Experience leading a migration of legacy software systems to a cloud environment, including transformation to cloud-native

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Iac) development and administration, developing or using tools such as Terraforn, YAML, Ansible, Cloudformation, or equivalent
  • Experience in scripting/programming languages such as Python, PowerShell, Visual Basic, .Net, Java, C/C++ and C#
  • Experience with Azure Cloud infrastructure technology
  • Experience working with Artifactory
  • Experience with software configuration management tools such as: Git and Jira
  • Experience with DevSecOps service/system delivery model
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level II certification or greater (e.g., Security+)
  • Experience working within complex or high security environments
  • Experience with Software Security Engineering, IA/Cybersecurity and industry platform hardening practices, such as DISA STIG Implementation
  • Experience in Systems Engineering, e.g., CONOPS development, requirements analysis, decomposition and allocation, interface definition, and trade studies
  • Knowledge of military mission planning systems
  • Cloud Service Provider certification(s) such as Azure (Solutions Architect, Developer, DevOps, Cloud Security) a plus

This position reports to Manhattan Beach, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Melbourne, FL, FL, USA.


Salary Range: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
