Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) Advanced Processing Solutions is working to develop next generation high performance computing systems to meet the mission demands of the NGMS Networked Information Solutions (NIS) business. Superconducting electronics forms the core of our technology, with a focus on energy-efficient computation including our patented superconducting digital logic technology, Reciprocal Quantum Logic (RQL). On a gate for gate basis, RQL consumes orders of magnitude less power than CMOS while running at significantly higher clock speeds.

Our Northrop Grumman Mission Systems team in McClellan (Sacramento), CA is seeking Cryogenic Systems Engineers. The qualified candidate will support Northrop Grumman’s Transformational Technology Business Area. Transformational Technology is focused on developing state-of-the-art next generation superconducting electronics (SCE) and advanced computing technologies.

Qualified Cryogenic Systems engineers will leverage their skills and experience in multiple of the following responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Championing process improvement activities
  • Establishing and analyzing test procedures
  • Lab Management / Lab Manager duties
  • Devising and implementing methods and procedures for evaluating the accuracy of test stand installations and qualification
  • Devising and implementing methods and procedures for tracking test assets and developing a plan for periodic review of asset activity (e.g., in use, idle, at calibration, needs repair/upgrade, awaiting final disposition, etc) across multiple labs
  • Providing a monthly report on the status of all assets to the program offices as required

This position requires fulltime on-site support at our facility in McClellan, CA.

This position can be filled at either the Cryogenic Systems Engineer or Cryogenic Systems Engineer level.

This position can be filled as a Cryogenic Systems Engineer or a Principal Cryogenic Systems Engineer

Basic Qualifications for Cryogenic Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in science, engineering, or related discipline with 2 years of experience; or 0 years of relevant experience with a Masters (MS) degree
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic test systems
  • Cabling and rack installation/electronic system integration experience
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a TS/SCI Clearance with Polygraph per business requirements; US Citizenship is required

Basic Qualifications for Cryogenic Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in science, engineering, or related discipline with 5 years of experience; or 3 years of relevant experience with a Masters (MS) degree; or 0 years with a PhD
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing
  • Experience troubleshooting electronic test systems
  • Cabling and rack installation/electronic system integration experience
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a TS/SCI Clearance with Polygraph per business requirements; US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications for Associate/Cryogenic Systems Engineer

  • A current and active TS/SCI clearance
  • Experience with superconducting electronics test platforms
  • Experience with cryogenic test environments
  • Experience with microwave electronics
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and requirements

This position reports to McClellan, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Sacramento, CA, CA, USA.


Salary Range: $85,000 USD - $127,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
