Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is currently seeking a Systems Analysist - Concept Designer to join our team to work on Advanced Programs. This position will be located in Northridge, California.

 

System concept design for weapon systems is a highly creative and challenging role. Tasking involves a wide breadth and understanding of engineering fundamentals across multiple disciplines to develop concepts that will drive the next generation of technologies and systems. The successful candidate is adept at taking under-defined requirements, developing system concepts, quantifying system concept performance via modeling and simulation, and appropriately communicating the results to internal and external customers.

 

In this role, the selected candidate will:

  • Use creative problem solving to develop models for advanced weapon system concepts to use in simulations to determine their operational effectiveness.

  • Collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines and work with senior engineers to develop weapon concepts.

  • Perform analysis to establish requirements for sizing, aerodynamics, propulsion, guidance and trajectories, and sensors.

  • Develop low and medium fidelity parametric and non-parametric models needed for system concept design including electronics, thermal management, propulsion, warhead, and mass properties.

  • Evaluate system performance via modeling and simulation of system concepts.

  • Develop and integrate workflows, processes, and tools for vehicle concept design optimization.

  • Support development of system Concepts of Operation (CONOPs) via Modeling and Simulation

  • Support technology roadmap development

  • Communicate design and analysis results to technical and non-technical audiences.

This role includes, but is not limited to the following activities:

  • Design, develop, and validate low and medium fidelity weapon system and subsystem models.

  • Develop missile concepts, configurations and associated component models needed for performance analysis.

  • Incorporate modeling and simulation tools into a broader Model Based Engineering environment.

  • Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis tasks to assess system performance

  • Perform optimization trade studies and analysis to support concept development and requirements.

  • Document and communicate results of design and analysis tasks. 

 Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in similar / related field OR Master's degree with 0 years of related experience.

  • Demonstrable professional experience, student organization experience, or course work in the following areas:

o    Vehicle Dynamics

o    Control Systems

o    Propulsion (solid rocket motor, liquid rocket engine, and/or air breathing systems)

o    Aerodynamics

o    Thermodynamics

  • ​Knowledge of Matlab, Simulink, C++, and/or Python

  • Ability to receive a U.S. Government DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Aerodynamics experience including wind tunnel testing, Missile DATCOM, and/or CFD

  • Propulsion experience including solid rocket motor design/development, liquid rocket engine, ramjet/scramjet, and/or other air breathing propulsion

  • Guidance, Control, and/or Trajectory Design Experience

  • Basic knowledge of digital and analog electronics

  • Basic knowledge of radio frequency and optical sensors

  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering / SysML

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimization


Salary Range: $85,000 USD - $127,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
