Northrop Grumman Defense Systems (NGDS) is seeking a Principal / Sr Principal System Safety Engineer with experience in Safety Engineering processes and standards to join our System Specialties Engineering team of qualified, diverse individuals. Activities include system safety analyses of complex missile systems.  The ideal candidate will have experience with MIL-STD-882 and familiarity with military and their equivalent industry standards. We are looking for an innovative, energetic and goal oriented individual to work alongside a multi-disciplinary team.

This position can be located in Northridge, CA or Tucson, AZ.

What You’ll Get to Do: 

  • Analyze, recommend, and drive safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures in order to mitigate or eliminate hazards
  • Apply engineering principles and safety standards to prepare system safety program plans, hazardous materials management program plans/reports, preliminary hazard analyses, system/subsystem hazard analyses, bent pin analyses, fault tree analyses, sneak circuit analyses, functional hazard analyses, software system safety analyses and safety assessment reports
  • Develop, review, update and approve system safety artifacts and system safety requirements
  • Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost, risk, and supportability analyses at all levels of the system life cycle
  • Participate in risk assessments/resolution, mishap investigations, software process safety and safety assessments

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Safety Engineer (T03):

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related STEM discipline with minimum of 5 years of relevant/related experience, or MS with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with electrical circuit schematics
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, recommend, and drive safety into system design, equipment, and procedures in order to mitigate or eliminate hazards
  • Ability to apply system safety engineering principles in accordance with MIL-STD-882 and analyses such as preliminary hazard analyses, system/subsystem hazard analyses, bent pin analyses, fault tree analyses, sneak circuit analyses, functional hazard analyses, software system safety analyses and safety assessment reports
  • Familiar with requirements development, system/software architecture, hardware/software design, software code implementation, test, verification and validation
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of leadership and customers and work independently
  • Familiar with military system safety and process standards and their industry equivalent such as: MIL-STD-882, RCC 319, AFSPCMAN 91-710, ASTM, ANSI, NEC, AFOSH, AOP-52, JOTP-51, PESHE, NFPA
  • US citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance

Basic Qualifications for a Sr. Principal (T04) in addition to those listed for a Principal Safety Engineer (T03):

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related STEM discipline with minimum of 9 years of relevant/related experience, or MS with 7 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, review, update and approve system safety artifacts and system safety requirements
  • Understanding of requirements development, system/software architecture, hardware/software design, software code implementation, test, verification and validation

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical circuit schematics
  • Experience with concept, design, manufacturing, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal of military weapon systems
  • Strong working knowledge of military system safety and process standards and their industry equivalent such as: MIL-STD-882, RCC 319, AFSPCMAN 91-710, ASTM, ANSI, NEC, AFOSH, AOP-52, JOTP-51, PESHE, NFPA
  • Experience with implementing and testing software safety requirements
  • Engineering leadership experience
  • Possess active DoD Security Clearance

This position reports to Northridge, CA, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Tucson, AZ, AZ, USA.


Salary Range: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
