We are looking for a Systems Engineering Manager 3As the manager of systems engineering for the Space Components and Strategic Businesses, Business Unit, you'll be responsible for leading the systems engineering team, with direct reports across the multiple operating sites. These sites specialize in propulsion, deployable systems, structures, integrated thermal systems and strategic business products. This position is available at the Northrop Grumman facility at either our Goleta, CA or Oxnard, CA.

The position shall require allocation of time between program direct Systems Engineering support and department management responsibilities.

The System Engineer program responsibilities supports the design, development, integration and test of space systems and subsystems. The System Engineering Manager will perform technical planning, requirements management, system/cross functional integration, verification and validation, and analyses for a total systems solution.

Through collaboration with Engineering product team leads and other functional managers, the Systems Engineering Manager is also responsible for resource management and prioritization to provide prompt response and situational resolutions to meet all VSO goals and objectives. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accountable to the Space Components Strategic Business Unit Engineering Director for meeting engineering safety, quality, delivery and cost expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Organize and define system level requirements, derive and allocate requirements to subsystems (performing or coordinating analyses as required), manage the requirements baseline in a relational database (such as DOORS), write clear requirement specifications, create Requirements Traceability and Verification Matrices (RTVMs), and collect the objective quality evidence (OQE) that verifies requirements are met.
  • Modeling, Simulation & Analysis: Develop system modeling, simulation, analysis and trade study activities, system capability analysis, antenna system performance/effectiveness analysis to ensure performance capabilities are consistent with mission requirements.
  • Interface Development & Management: Identify external and internal interfaces, define parameters that characterize those interfaces (performing or coordinating analyses as required), develop interface control documents & deliverables, and participate in system architecture & design development to resolve interface issues and ensure interface compliance.
  • Collaborate with Value Stream Owner (Site Operations Leader) for meeting the Engineering safety, quality, delivery and cost expectations of internal and external customers within entire product value streams. Ensures plans are developed and executed to meet internal and external customer requirements.
  • Deploy engineering resources to meet customer demands. Manage department priorities.
  • Support improvement initiatives for Engineering Daily Management, process standards, tools and risk management.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Master Scheduling, Product Value Stream Managers and Business Support Functions (Program Managers, Finance, Contracts, HR, etc.), including proposal support, to achieve product and site goals via sharing of resources, tools, equipment, processes, etc.
  • Provide functional leadership, employee development, training and mentoring.
  • Establish and maintain metrics that provide real-time visibility to measure, monitor, and control process performance, including key inputs, outputs, and early warning event triggers.
  • Consolidate systems engineering processes and integrate across operating units.
  • Evaluate and implement systems engineering best practices across operating units.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and a minimum of 9 years of relevant work experience or 7 years’ related experience with a Master’s Degree.
  • 3 years leadership experience in a management role or combined years as a technical lead, with 2 or more staff assigned to provide technical guidance or leadership.
  • Expertise of Systems Engineering discipline, tools, processes, and products
  • Experience with requirements management databases (e.g., DOORS)
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering tools and processes
  • Experience with design development for space domain and technologies
  • Experience in integration and test of complex systems
  • Experience preparing work products associated with the system engineering lifecycle milestones (e.g. SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, PSR)
  • Experience reviewing part and assembly drawings
  • Ability to travel between the all operating sites and travel to support customers.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance is required.
  • US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Engineering MS degree or MBA preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills – presentation, oral, written, and listening.
  • Proven track record of managing direct reports of various disciplines and ability to lead multiple engineering disciplines to reach common goals and objectives.
  • Ability to provide technical communication and coordination with senior leadership.
  • Combination of industry knowledge, leadership skills, management expertise and in-depth knowledge of the design engineering process.
  • Proven ability to perform problem analysis and resolution using lean and continuous improvement tools and tactics to satisfy customer and business needs.
  • Requires knowledge and experience with implementation and execution of process standards, systems, processes, and business tools focused on engineering and technical risk management identification and mitigation.

Salary Range:

S03: 176,100.00 - 264,100.00

Salary Range: $176,100 USD - $264,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
