We are looking for you to join our team as a Systems Engineer- Directional Communications Architect based out of San Diego, CA. As an Architect at Northrop Grumman you will have a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be a part of our Enterprise-wide digital transformation. What You Will Get To Do:

Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide Tactical Data Links (TDL) subject matter expertise to the organization, supporting overall business and program development, customer engagement, and mission evaluations

  • Design of wireless communications links between multiple nodes, issues of range, throughput, and received signal quality are of critical importance to the system engineer.

  • Coordinate technical solutions and implementation across all of the various TDL based programs, ensuring technical viability, applicability, and consistency

  • Be a part of a team of TDL expertise that supports the overall business

This position will require onsite work however for this role we are able to offer flexible work arrangements and some remote work will be possible.

Basic Qualifications Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent STEM field with a focus on digital communication systems with 5 years of related experience, or a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 3 years of related experience or a PHD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent with a focus on digital communication systems with 0 years of related experience.

Basic Qualifications Sr. Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent STEM field with a focus on digital communication systems with 9 years of related experience, or a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 7 years of related experience or a PHD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent with a focus on digital communication systems with 4 years of related experience.

Basic Qualifications Principal and Sr. Principal Systems Engineer:

  • Understanding of TDL communications (such as MADL, BE CDL, Link16, etc) and perform analysis on capabilities

  • Familiar with mesh architectures (example: Link Budget Analysis) and other related designs

  • Experience in requirements writing, analysis, allocation & derivation and verification traceability

  • Demonstrated proficiency in analytical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent decision making and communication (written and oral) skills

  • Strong leadership skills

  • US citizenship with current active DoD secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High proficiency with tools required for communication system and network modeling and simulation

  • Background in digital communications theory, commercial and military wireless networking technologies

  • Development of communication waveform processing techniques and architectures

  • Demonstrated skills in bridging the gap between theoretical and practical and in performing associated trade off analysis

  • Experience collaborating with DoD and other related US government agencies


Salary Range: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
