Northrop Grumman’s Mission Systems (NGMS) sector is looking for a Staff Systems Architect to lead the Digital Thread Integrated Product Team (IPT) for the Advanced Launcher Contract Research and Development (CRAD) program start up. This individual will chart the course for new Digital Engineering (DE) capabilities in our Marine Systems business unit. These new capabilities will enhance the way we design, develop, produce, deploy, and sustain our hardware products. The architect will plan and design system architectures that integrate the product data throughout the life-cycle of the hardware.

The person hired into this position can work on-site or hybrid teleworking at any of our primary Marine Systems locations (Sunnyvale, Ocean Springs, Cape Canaveral, Annapolis) or full-time remote. Occasional travel will be required to customer sites and other Marine Systems locations.  

What You'll Get to Do:

Primary responsibilities of the position include definition of key capabilities and requirements for the Digital Thread for current and future programs, development of strategies to foster adoption of enterprise Digital Engineering tools and environments, and engagement of customer and internal stakeholders to build collaboration across the enterprise. The selected individual will design and develop system architectures to provide key capabilities. The architect will lead a team to identify and assess candidate technologies and develop tools and methods for integration of disciplines (such as requirements analysis, system architecture development, design, modeling & simulation, cost & schedule estimation, risk assessment, capacity planning, manufacturing, and quality) to drive best value capability additions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline with 14+ years of relevant experience; OR Master's Degree in STEM with 12+ years of experience; OR PhD with 9+ years of experience.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering, software design and integration, or demonstrated ability to work with software-aided design tools in the development of system architecture.
  • Experience with Digital Engineering applications such as or similar to: Cameo Enterprise Architect and SysML modeling, requirements management, performance modeling and simulation, CAD/CAM, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), data analytics tools, or risk management.
  • Experience with interface management between system elements and teams.
  • Ability and skills to work multi-disciplined engineering problems and foster collaboration across functional boundaries.
  • Experience leading engineering teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain an Active DoD Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DoD Secret clearance or higher.
  • Experience and familiarity with Digital Thread tools and integration, such as Syndeia, eQube, OSLC.
  • Understanding and demonstrated application of Agile methodology and tools (Confluence, Jira), cloud services, continuous deployment/continuous integration, configuration management.
  • Experience with Digital Engineering applications, including Cameo Enterprise Architect and SysML modeling, requirements management, performance modeling and simulation, CAD/CAM, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), data analytics tools, or risk management.
  • Systems Engineering experience with large, complex systems.
  • Experience in manufacturing systems such as Lean Product and Process Development.
  • Experience and understanding of the complete program lifecycle, including relationships and data flows between concept definition, requirements, design, development, production, system verification and deployment, and operations and maintenance or sustainment.
  • Experience with cost-benefit analysis.
  • Participation in proposal efforts.

This position reports to Sunnyvale, CA, USA, however, you are able to work from any of the additional 5 locations listed above.


Salary Range: $139,000 USD - $241,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
