We are looking for you to join our team as a Systems Safety Engineer based out of Woodland Hills, CA. What You’ll get to Do:

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector is seeking a System Safety Engineer with experience in Safety Engineering processes and standards to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Woodland Hills, CA.

The qualified applicant will become part of Northrop Grumman's System Safety team within Specialty Engineering. Activities include system safety analysis of avionics and navigation systems. The ideal candidate will have experience with MIL-STD-882E and familiarity with Military and their equivalent industry standards such as: MIL-STD-1629, DO-178B/C, DO-254, ARP-4754, ARP-4761, etc. 

This is an exciting, challenging and highly specialized field that is in need of a talented, energized and innovative individual who wants to pursue further growth in System Safety Engineering.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Systems Safety Engineer:

  • BS in Engineering in a STEM discipline or relevant degree with 5 years of System Safety Engineering experience or a MS in Engineering in a STEM discipline or relevant degree with 3 years of experience in Systems and/or Software Safety Engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, recommend, and drive safety into system design, equipment, and procedures in order to mitigate or eliminate hazards
  • Demonstrated ability to apply system safety engineering principles in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and analyses such as PHAs, FHAs, SHAs/SSHAs, Bent Pin Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, and Software System Safety Analyses
  • Demonstrated ability to identify system safety issues, propose solutions, and ensure appropriate action is taken to mitigate safety issues
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, review, update, and approve system safety artifacts and system safety requirements
  • History of demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to work independently
  • Must have excellent presentation skills
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of employees and customers
  • US Citizenship is required in order to obtain and maintain security clearance

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Systems Safety Engineer:

  • BS in Engineering in a STEM discipline or relevant degree with 9 years of System Safety Engineering experience or a MS in Engineering in a STEM discipline or relevant degree with 7 years of experience in Systems and/or Software Safety Engineering, or a PhD with 4 years of experience
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, recommend, and drive safety into system design, equipment, and procedures in order to mitigate or eliminate hazards
  • Demonstrated ability to apply system safety engineering principles in accordance with MIL-STD-882E and analyses such as PHAs, FHAs, SHAs/SSHAs, Bent Pin Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, and Software System Safety Analyses
  • Demonstrated ability to identify system safety issues, propose solutions, and ensure appropriate action is taken to mitigate safety issues
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, review, update, and approve system safety artifacts and system safety requirements
  • History of demonstrated leadership capabilities and ability to work independently
  • Must have excellent presentation skills

  • US Citizenship is required in order to obtain and maintain security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with electrical circuit schematics and FMECA data review
  • Familiarity with requirements tools such as DOORS, Safety and Reliability tools such as PTC WindChill Quality Solutions, Agile software tools, etc.
  • Strong working knowledge of Military systems safety and process standards and their Industry equivalent such as: MIL-STD-882, DO-178B/C, DO-248, DO-254, ARP-4754, ARP-4761, MIL-HDBK-516C, etc.
  • Possess current DoD Security Clearance (investigation completed within last 5 years)


Salary Range: $104,600 USD - $157,000 USD
Salary Range 2: $129,700 USD - $194,500 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
