The Payload and Ground Systems organization within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. Our team in Colorado Springs, CO has an immediate opportunity for a Senior Manager Systems Engineering. On the Space Systems Sector team, you’ll join our experts in developing systems and solutions that keep our world safe.

Our ideal candidate will be responsible for the overall direction, leadership, and management of the Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) Division Colorado Springs Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test department consisting of approximately 240 engineers supporting a diverse set of programs. The department provides systems engineering, integration, test and cyber security support to programs within the Integrated National Systems Business Unit.

More of what you’ll be doing in this role:

  • Our ideal candidate for this position will be expected to build upon recent progress in the implementation of Digital Engineering (to include Model-Based Engineering) and Agile developed systems.

  • Collaborate with business area leadership, business development, business management, mission assurance, product development, supply chain management, and prime and sub-contractors from other companies to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.

  • Leadership and execution responsibilities include staff resource planning and scheduling, mentoring, developing and improving staff technical skills, leading complex technical issue resolution, and conducting performance and salary reviews.

  • Lead a group of managers and their teams in the development, implementation, and refinement of strong processes with emphasis on quantitative management, continuous improvement, employee engagement, and engineering affordability with high quality work product results.

  • Functional management responsibilities include leading a team of functional managers as well as managing senior Northrop Grumman engineers in the Colorado Springs area.

  • Assess staffing needs, current as well as projected, supporting recruitment activities including creation of requisitions, conducting interviews, and approving offers.

  • Be a key partner in targeted staffing initiatives aligned to organizational goals and objectives.

  • Partner with engineering and program management peers to assure a balanced and efficient assignment of resources to support and achieve key mission priorities.

  • Provide department with regular flow down of company and organizational status with demonstrated experience in leading high performing organizations and leading organizational change.

  • Foster a working environment which reinforces and drives accountability to fundamental Northrop Grumman Values focused on integrity, quality, shared success, and innovation.

  • Coach, support, train, and motivate team members to ensure a high level of performance through effective communication and presentation skills.

  • Proficiency in technical problem solving, to include decomposition, root cause analysis, solution development, implementation and monitoring.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An active DoD Secret clearance.

  • BS degree and 14+ years of progressively responsible experience. Or 12 years with a Masters. 10 years with a Ph.D.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a systems engineering, integration, and test environment.

  • Able to work collaboratively with other engineering departments at the Colorado Springs locations as well as other sites across the PGS Division, Space Systems Sector and the corporation.

  • Excellent leadership, strategic thinking, planning, management, and interpersonal communication and collaboration skills with a proven track record of leading a team of multi-disciplinary engineers

  • Experience in all aspects of the engineering process, from requirements analysis through verification testing.

  • Previous leadership experience in leading execution of multiple simultaneous programs

  • Experience leading a large team of technical experts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or ability to obtain a Top Secret/SCI clearance

  • Solid technical foundation in systems engineering

  • Experience with large scale, complex, hardware and software systems

  • Experience interpreting and executing NG Principles and Operating Practices (PrOPs)

  • Knowledge of/experience with Model Based Engineering (MBE) and Agile development is highly desired

  • Knowledge of/experience with cyber security requirements and processes highly desired

  • Experience in the development, modernization and sustainment of ground-based radars

  • Position may be performed in conjunction with a role on a contract or Independent Research and Development (IRAD) project within the Colorado Springs area.


Salary Range: $160,100 USD - $240,100 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
