Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems is offering a unique career opportunity for a Staff Engineer Systems Architect – Data Handling Architect (25-094) to join our team of diverse and qualified individuals. This position, based in Colorado Springs, CO., or Huntsville, AL., promises an exciting and challenging role in a dynamic work environment.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program, which you will be a vital part of, integrates the Missile Defense System. It is a crucial operational system that enables the U.S. president, secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations. Your role will be to ensure the system's design and technology maturity constraints are met, converting mission requirements into total systems solutions. C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that enables an optimized response to threats of all ranges in all phases of flight. C2BMC is the force multiplier that globally and regionally networks integrate, synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to optimize performance. C2BMC is integral to all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise all current and future missile defense system capabilities.
The candidate will be part of an integrated architecture & systems engineering team on a multi-company teammate program, tasked with defining the operational, physical, functional, and technical architecture necessary to describe the vision and desired capabilities of an evolving C2BMC effort. The candidate should understand DoD and missile defense command and control, battle management (C2BMC) architectures and system concepts, mission, and common system test and data analysis techniques.
Essential Functions:
- Serves as the focal point for the development and communication of the system architecture
- Ensures conversion of mission requirements into total systems solutions that account for the system's design and technology maturity constraints
- Develops systems and system element architecture, design, and interface definition
- Supports internal and external design reviews
- Maintains knowledge of current and developing technologies and design and analysis methodologies
- Develops models and architectural guidelines for current and future system development
- Must have experience architecting graceful degradation and/or data prioritization and de-prioritization
- Must possess the ability to be part of an integrated team tasked with defining the operational, physical, functional, and technical architecture necessary to describe the vision and desired capabilities of an evolving C2BMC effort
- Must possess the ability to exploit that architecture background to assist in defining system capabilities and developing architecture artifacts
- Ability to analyze high-level needs and, through a structured and logical approach, refine the need into an integrated set of hardware and software
- Ability to lead portions of the activity
- Able to communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings
- Communicating and interacting with the customer and related system programs is essential
Salary range in Colorado Springs: $155,400 - $233,200
Salary range in Huntsville: $163,200 - $244,800
Basic Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM Computer Science, Technology, Engineering, Software Engineering, or Mathematics discipline preferred from an accredited university and 12 years of related work experience or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 10 years of related working experience, or PhD in a related STEM discipline with 7 years of related working experience
- Applicants must have a current active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Analyzing high-level needs and, through a structured and logical approach, refining the need into an integrated set of hardware and software
- Designing and developing new systems and integrating existing systems
- Communicating and interacting with the customer and related system programs, including presenting technical approaches and findings in written and oral form
- Leading portions of these activities:
- Designs
- Develops
- Oversees system architectures, including complex systems and systems design activities
- Architecting systems in an environment that leverages existing or COTS/GOTS components with DoD interoperability in mind
- Identification of desired capabilities and definition of desired capabilities, communicating the desired capabilities to a diverse group of developers, engineers, subject matter experts, and users
- Generating architecture artifacts to document and control achieving the desired capabilities
- Must have experience developing system engineering artifacts:
- Specifications
- Interface Control Documents
- Use Cases
- System Architecture Descriptions
- Trade Studies, etc.
- Familiarity with the application and use of systems engineering tools for requirements management and object-oriented requirements definition (e.g., DOORS)
- Must have experience working in an integrated team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions
- The required skills include:
- Engineering leadership
- Identifying and defining desired capabilities
- Fielding new capabilities
- System-of-system definition
- Integration practices and methods
- Communicating the desired capabilities to a diverse group of developers, engineers, subject matter experts, and users
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 10 years of related working experience is highly preferred
- Graduate Certificate: Model-Based Systems Engineering (Ex: Stevens, Caltech, UCSD, USC, GWU, INCOSE cohort, etc)
- Certification: INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Certification
- Certification: Object Management Group Certified Systems Modeling Professional - Model Builder Intermediate (OCSMP - MBI)
- Certified Architect
- Experience using C2BMC processes and methods is desirable
