Northrop Grumman Space Systems – Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Sr. Principal Systems Engineer – X-Lab to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located out of Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado Springs, CO.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications Experimentation Laboratory (C2BMC X-Lab) is a very fast paced and dynamic environment. The X-Lab is responsible for developing and integrating future-capability prototypes for the Missile Defense System (MDS) including Sensor/Weapon Integration, Algorithm Development, User Interface Development and other critical leading-edge missile defense technologies. The X-Lab has a need to augment the team with a senior systems engineer to lead our Analysis Team.

Essential Functions:

  • This position will focus on and lead the analysis of R&D systems in C2BMC and will contribute to other ongoing X-Lab projects as needed.
  • The team will assess how the C2BMC prototype system performs by identifying high level objectives and refining into an integrated set of metrics, analysis tool development, assessment of experimental data, generating and presenting customer-quality products containing analytical observations.
  • The Analysis Team Lead will apply these results to identify and work to enhance C2BMC for future operations.
  • Perform both as an individual contributor and as a Team Lead for advanced concepts development projects. This includes directing the activities of junior level engineers. Contribute to full lifecycle development of advanced concepts.
  • Position is responsible for performing the evaluation of advanced missile defense command and control capabilities to provide highly innovative and ingenious solutions to complex technical problems. Including defining and coordinating analysis objectives and metrics for various experimental prototypes, performing the associated analysis, and serve as the X-Lab spokesperson on advanced projects when briefing results to the customer.
  • The Systems Engineer/ Analysis Team Lead will provide oversight of maintenance and improvements to the analysis tool suite, team analysis standards and metrics.
  • Support advanced concept demonstrations during live and simulated MDA test events.

Basic Qualifications:

If applicable, please note your updated security clearance and IAT/relevant certifications on your resume.

  • An active Top Secret clearance is required.
  • 9 Years with Bachelor’s degree in a related field; 7 years’ with a Master’s degree.
  • Experience contributing to an integrated team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions that includes a background in all aspects of the analysis life cycle.
  • The Systems Engineer/ Analysis Team Lead should have experience with identification of analysis objectives, metric generation, data assessment, and presentation of the results.
  • The Analysis Team Lead should have demonstrated the ability to analyze high level customer needs and defined a structured and logical approach to refine the objectives and analysis requirements.
  • Analysis tool development using MATLAB, Python, Excel, bash, etc.
  • Must have strong math and physics, including probability and statistics, linear algebra, and calculus.
  • Familiarity with Linux and/or Unix based development.
  • Perform verification and validation of systems (functional and performance)
  • Full cycle systems engineering of new capabilities.
  • System and subsystem decomposition
  • Use case, system requirements, and performance specification development.
  • System interface design & Interface Control Document development 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ideally, the Systems Engineer/ Analysis Team Lead will have experience in working on IRAD-type projects.
  • Experience with integration practices and methods
  • Experience with test driven development and continuous integration using GitLab CI/CD
  • Ability to extract and associate data from log files to support analysis.
  • Operating systems experience with Windows & Unix/Linux
  • Algorithm design and implementation • DoD Architecture Framework (DoDAF)
  • Physics & mechanics of missile flight and satellite orbits
  • Theory and application of the MDS and space domain
  • Theory and application of command-and-control systems
  • Theory and application of track correlation algorithms
  • Desire a strong analytical background including Monte Carlo analysis and statistical regression.
  • Familiarity with Link-16, including content, transmission rules, etc.
  • Desire experience with distributed application environments coded in Java, C++, or other Object-Oriented languages.
  • Experience with Agile development techniques and tools

Salary Range: $117,900 USD - $176,900 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
