Northrop Grumman Space Systems is looking for a Missile Modeling Engineer to support the Threat Modeling Center for the Missile Defense System group, located at the Schriever SFB, Colorado.

The Threat Modeling Center (TMC) is responsible for the development and delivery of high-fidelity threat modeling products in support of MDA and MDA's Ballistic Missile Defense System. The Missile Modeling Engineer role serves as a developer and verifier of kinematic threat models developed to support MDA's various use cases.

Job Duties:

  • This position requires a detail-oriented entry-level engineer responsible for developing ballistic and advanced/hypersonic kinematic threat models for use in a variety of modeling and simulation tools/frameworks/media.
  • Must be able to apply standard engineering and mathematical algorithms to ensure the accurate portrayal of expected missile or space launch vehicle behavioral characteristics during all phases of powered and un-powered flight.
  • Must have a good understanding of modeling and simulation methods and processes.
  • Must be able to research, interpret, and verify parameters required to build, replicate, and propagate missile or space launch vehicle trajectories including, but not limited to, staging debris, countermeasures, and payload traits. 
  • Must be able to author highly technical Verification and Validation (V&V) documents.
  • Must be able to work with little to no direct supervision, work as an integral member of a product deliver team and meet time critical delivery schedules.

Basic Qualifications:

Level 1: 0-2 years of experience with bachelor's degree in engineering, Aeronautics, Physics, Math or related discipline; or at least 4 years of experience in lieu of degree

Level 2: At least 2 years' experience with bachelor's degree in engineering, Aeronautics, Physics, Math or related discipline; or 0 years of experience with Master's degree, or at least 6 years of experience in lieu of degree

  • Programming background to include languages such as MATLAB and Python
  • Strong knowledge of the flight characteristics, motion, and performance of ballistic missiles
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong math, physics or engineering background
  • Modeling, Simulation, and automation experience
  • Previous experience with modeling flight characteristics, motion, atmospheric dynamics, and missile performance parameters of ballistic missiles
  • Strong background in missile system engineering performance is highly desirable
  • Mastery of engineering modeling principles behind body motion, trajectory generation, counter measures, and debris is a plus
  • Possess and active DoD Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain a DoD Top Secret Clearance


Salary Range: $63,800 USD - $95,800 USD
Salary Range 2: $77,200 USD - $115,800 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
