Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector is seeking a Line-of-Sight Systems Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals.  This position will be located at our Linthicum/Baltimore, MD campus. This position requires ~100% on-site work and an ability to pass an enhanced security review.

Our team supports multiple programs to develop LOS servo control systems.  Candidates should have a strong control systems background, and experience with the design, integration and testing of multiple parts of precision gimbal stabilized systems. These include Gimbals, Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), embedded DSPs or microcontrollers, boresighting, transfer alignment algorithms, motor selection, motor drives, and/or the EO/IR devices being controlled. Candidates must be a strong technical leader, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be resourceful. They should project a positive attitude and work cooperatively in a fast-paced environment. They should also exhibit the ability and desire to advance the technological capabilities needed by our customers.

Roles and responsibilities include

  • Function as a systems engineer for one or more parts of servo control systems.  
  • Support integration and testing of precision gimbal stabilized systems and radar positioner systems.
  • Analyze the designed control system in both time and frequency domains. Iterate through the design process until the control system meets all system requirements.
  • Design and implement communication interfaces to upstream system software and servo components such as optical encoders, rate sensors, IMU, and INS.

Education Requirements

Principal Systems Engineer (Level 3)

Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline - Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Math, or other related technical curriculum with at least 5 years of related experience, 3 years related experience with a Master's Degree.

Senior Principal Systems Engineer (Level 4)

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or other Engineering with 9 years of related experience, 7 years related experience with a Master’s Degree, 5 years with a PhD,

Basic Qualifications

  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience with the design of one or more parts of servo control systems
  • Experience with integration and test of one or more parts of servo control systems
  • Able to function in a multi-disciplinary team-oriented environment and rapidly adapt to changing work priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret clearance prior to starting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) with a concentration in guidance, navigation, and control
  • Experience with typical electro-optical pointing hardware such as encoders, resolvers, inertial measurement units, motors, as well as pointing and control flight software constructs such as onboard attitude propagation and calibration, motor control, and anomaly, diagnostic, and resolution applications
  • Experience with simulation and analysis of complete multi-axis pointing and tracking control systems with inertial stabilization
  • Technical understanding in LOS calibration techniques and working knowledge of Kalman filtering and least squares estimation techniques
  • Proficiency in object oriented programming.
  • Active DoD Secret/Top Secret and SCI Clearance.

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Salary Range: $96,900 USD - $145,300 USD
Salary Range 2: $120,000 USD - $180,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
