The Transformational Computing business within Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is a highly motivated, talented, and growing organization focused on advancing the science and engineering of superconducting electronic systems into new capabilities and products. Transformational Computing is developing the technologies to transform computing beyond Moore’s Law by advancing development of computer architectures, processing and memory subsystems, and large-scale high-performance computing systems.

The Systems Engineering group is seeking Thermal Engineers to join our Simulation and Modeling team to perform front-end system design activities and product development. Reporting to the Systems Engineering Lead, the Thermal Engineer will collaborate with research scientists and product teams to perform system architecture and design activities.  While the focus is on hardware/software systems, a cross-functional team will be needed that can apply aspects of microwave and analog electronics, digital hardware design, mechanical and thermal design, and environmental control.


This position will serve on-site in Linthicum/ Annapolis Junction, MD.

Candidates would work as thermal engineers supporting the development of superconducting computing technologies. Responsibilities include creating low temperature numerical models, running experiments measuring thermal properties of materials, boundary resistances, and heating in components. The job will often require deep dives into the literature to understand the unique physics that occurs in the sub Kelvin/nanoscale regime.

This position can be filled at the Thermal Systems Engineer level OR Principal Thermal Systems Engineer level. Qualifications for both are listed below:

Basic Qualifications for a Thermal Engineer:

  • Bachelor's of Science in: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics or related field specializing in thermodynamics and heat transfer with 2 years of experience, a M.S Degree with at least 6+ months of related working experience.
  • Working knowledge of thermal analysis software (COMSOL, IcePak, Sinda/Fluint) or similar.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong background in heat transfer
  • Experimental design
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with CI/FS poly clearance per business requirements.

Basic Qualifications for a Principal Thermal Systems Engineer:

  • Bachelor's of Science in: Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics or related field specializing in thermodynamics and heat transfer with 5 years of experience, a M.S Degree with 3 years of experience; 0 years with a PhD.
  • Working knowledge of thermal analysis software (COMSOL, IcePak, Sinda/Fluint) or similar.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong background in heat transfer
  • Experimental design
  • Ability to communicate effectively to team members both verbally and in writing.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with CI/FS poly clearance per business requirements.

Preferred Qualifications for a Thermal Engineer / Principal Thermal Systems Engineer:

  • Design and analysis experience simulating heat transfer within superconducting circuitry.
  • Working Knowledge of cryogenic test systems; dilution Refrigeration, 4 Kelvin cryo-coolers, Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigeration (ADR) and liquid helium emersion.
  • Experience in Nanoscale heat transfer
  • Experience in cryogenic system design and analysis
  • Experience in modeling mechanical structures in; Solidworks, NX or similar.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Active TS/SCI with CI/FS poly security clearance.

This position reports to Linthicum, MD, USA, however, this position can also be worked from Annapolis Junction, MD, MD, USA.


Salary Range: $81,000 USD - $127,400 USD
Salary Range 2: $99,800 USD - $157,000 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
